Re: Ridge American Oak Article

When we were there last weekend I asked if they use French oak on any of their wines. They said there is a couple barrels and a very small amount is used in the Monte Bello blend. Aprox 1% iirc. I do like Ridge wines and am a member. I do wish they would make a wine or two every year with French oak...

Jim, David and Robert Thanks for the suggestions. I will certainly seek a few of them out. I did have the Cardinale in hand at Total Wine and went with the Bellevue instead. Well after reading this thread and many others about how well “modern” Bordeaux is drinking lately I figured I would start trying a few. After all if Bordeaux is becoming more like Napa then this will be right up my alley. :) Admittedly I do really like big extracted Cali reds from ripe vintages but...

Recently
2014 Ridge Paso Robles Zin and 2017 Ridge Geyserville. Both good wines but the Geyserville is clearly the better wine. While enjoyable now I will hold my remaining 17’s for a while. I will likely add a few more of the geyserville in hopes of having enough to try a few at 20+ years.

Enjoyable. A little American oak, red fruits, pepper/spice and acid that keeps this wine lighter than it looks.

My pick at $25 would be the Walter Hansel Estate Chard.
Absolutely agree with this. Hard to beat for the money. Also Ramey Russian River or Sonoma. Great chard’s as well.

I’m finishing my first bottle of this over 2 days and I like it. It’s a simple wine. Big, soft up front and drinks easily. Short, sweet finish. For the $$$ it’s good imo. I would agree with others that this is a good wine for non wine geeks. I’d give it 90 pts.
