The issue is not that the tastings were rigged, it is that the wines were strangely selected. The tasting was a little like having a beauty pageant for only moderately attractive people, say 5 to 7 out of 10, but not allowing really "beautiful" people compete. Thanks for the info. Glad you mentioned some restaurants as we will need to eat. We have arranged visits to 7 wineries in Brunello/Chianti over several days, but wanted an afternoon to walk around Montepulciano with nothing "planned".... and just pop in for a tasting.

Just got back from spending 2 weeks in Italy. Weather was wonderful. San gimignano is magical after dark. We went around dusk for dinner and then walked back through town after dinner. Was there in March. We skipped the $175 wine pairing and opted for the "Reserve" wine pairing....I think $300? Was fantastic! And Somm kept coming back asking us if we wanted a bit more.

I don't even look to Napa anymore for wines. What's the point? Find a wine you like and you can afford maybe two? Luckily, lots of other regions/wines that I can afford to drink on more than an annual basis.
