Bottles are about 3/4 inch longer than other German bottles, no big deal for me.

Love the wines, 4th most populous in the cellar from a very short start.

Yep same same.

I bought 6 of the (to my mind) superior 2016 bottles for half the price of one of those mags the day before the auction.

The whole GG Auction was a bit of a damp squib, the room was almost empty.

Re: 2019 Grosser Ring Auctions

Tom, I don’t think the producers keep back serious quantities for resale, though it is allowed as you mention. Indeed some producers put extra bottles in to a lot, use their entire supply. The retail stores offering auction wines are buying them at the auction. Also I don’t think Schaefer send ‘most...

What does a 6L German bottle look like?
9/10 it’s Champagne shaped. But I have seen a slightly squished German flute version.

That 2018 is a mixed vintage shouldn’t surprise anyone. All reputable critics have been saying the same since April.

2019 Grosser Ring Auctions

A quick trot around the pre auction tasting.

It’s mixed.

You can’t buy based on prior experience to anything like the normal degree this year.

Even within producers the wines seemed varied.

More to come.

I’d advise really trying to understand the differences between (say) Schaefer Spatlese GD AP #10 and #05 before buying auction wines you won’t drink for over a decade.

That said in about to head off for my tenth auction, have several hundred bottles on the cellar and claim no expertise.

I think offering GG at auction is a mistake. If for no reason other than the auction already taking far too long!

I’m surprised smaller members would be in favour of it since it seems even less likely their wines would be included if the best ones offered even more wines.

Let’s see.
