If this wine tastes anything like his Wind Gap product, this is an easy pass. Those wines by far were not very good and I would say some of them were borderline undrinkable.

I also used to be on the Saxum list. The wines I had that were aged included the 2006s and 2007s. IMO, the wines were well made but did not develop any complexity, they just became softer. I thought they were better when drank and appreciated for their copious fruit.

Tom - I quit buying the syrah's and only buy Mike's zins. I have consumed the majority of my 2006-2008 syrah's and have found that the wines (for my taste) do not develop any complexity. Tom - I have do idea what Pax was doing with these wines. I have had both of the ones you tasted and they are thin, insipid and devoid of fruit. An experiment that went horribly wrong.

Drank a 2002 St. Innocent Freedom Hill over Memorial Day weekend that was just phenomenal. One of the best domestic pinot's I have ever had.

I find it funny they wont mention the two businesses involved in buying the wines. I dont know for sure but my guess is that they turned a blind eye to how the wines were acquired.

With very few exceptions, 2003 CDP. Most the wines were awful after sitting in bottle for a couple of years. I ended up cooking or dumping most of my 2003s. The 2003s I would have liked to drink (Clos des Pape and Pegau were stolen by Holder).

Given what happened to myself and others regarding Bill Holder and Safe Harbor storage, just make sure you have good insurance as well as a accurate inventory of what you store offsite.

It appears that justice is finally in the process of being served. Holder was indicted yesterday in U.S. District Court, District of Maryland, on 5 counts of wire fraud and 5 counts of interstate transportation of stolen property. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.

I am very hopeful that in the next 30 days or so, we will find out a lot more about Bill Holder and his criminal activities. It appears based on MD court filings that he was evicted from his place of business in September for non-payment of rent.

I have had a bunch of these the last couple of years and the bottle you describe does not mirror my experience. Decant a 23 year old bottle for a day? That is nuts. I have found the wine opens up in the glass over an hour or two but it does not need a long decant. YMMV.

Whatever you do, do not do any business with Safe Harbor and Bill Holder. He has defrauded people out of millions of dollars of wine. I dont think he is in business anymore and he is under investigation by the FBI.

Diane - I used all my remaining 2003's for that exact purposes. They worked great with braised beef dishes but were completely awful to drink. I bought a bunch when I first started collecting wine. I wish I had bought more Italian wine.
