we actually picked the Tempranillo, and about half the Grenache yesterday before the rain, Ken. Hoping to see the rest in the next 10-15 days, but feel, since this is only the fourth harvest from Shake Ridge, that I'm now in somewhat uncharted territory, since this seems to be the weirdest vintage i...

7/8 of an inch yesterday morning at Shake Ridge! It poured for about 45 minutes to an hour. Lots of shaking of vines to dry things out (they don't call it Shake Ridge for nothing, I guess. :-D )

We've now picked Vermentino and Grenache Blanc, and Gamay for both red and white (last of the Gamay yesterday). Shake Ridge left to finish off the harvest, over what I'm hoping won't be more than the next 2-3 weeks. Everything thus far, seems superb!

Night time lows in the Apple Hill area in Placerville, and down in the hills east of Sutter Creek (the two areas where my grapes are grown) are 4-6 degrees above what they've usually been. It's the most striking feature of this season, for me. The season itself was probably 10 to 14 days behind at b...

I really enjoy this thread also, and because I purchase grapes, I'm less inclined to post much because I'm not in the vines every day like Casey and others of you are, and don't feel I have as much to offer. I learn a lot from the thread, that's much of my enjoyment.

There was a Spanish restaurant, Duende, that opened in Oakland a number of years back, and we went to the soft opening, and I had a kegged Tempranillo from Louisa Lindquist that was delicious, so the seed for working with that grape was planted at that time. Ken, I wonder if the quantity was so much smaller that you didn't have enough weight to crush any fruit and get enough of a ferment started outside the whole berries.

It's been a while since I stuck a tractor, but yesterday was a close call. I hate running the tractor over wet soil so soon after rain, but I felt pressed to get sprayed. Concrete fermentors/aging vessels

Joe, the limestone in the concrete makes it (the concrete) alkaline, the tartaric reacts with that, creating a neutral surface (given sufficient tartaric in the rinse). I never added any after the first treatment. When you put grape juice or wine in the tank, after the treatment, the pH of the juice...

Concrete fermentors/aging vessels

If you don't treat the tank with an acid solution to neutralize the limestone in the concrete you'll be likely to encounter a strong concrete taste, and also a significant rise in pH. The rinse I used was 30% tartaric in water. I painted on 5 coats, and it worked just fine. The wines I made in that ...
