Fichet and Le Caviste wine bars are both really good if they are open. It’s Le Pichet (not Fichet), and I love that place!! You won’t find high end unicorns but their list is well curated, big on value, and the food is excellent. And the chocolat chaud is legit! I would also recommend Vif in Fremon...

Ballard is absolutely chock full of great breweries. Cap Hill also has a few there or close but you could stumble around Ballard all day and not run out of breweries and restaurants. Some of my favorites include Fair Isle (great saison style beers), Reubens, Lucky Envelope (cool sours), Urban Family...

At the low end Julien Barge Cotes du Rhone Les Coteaux de Legendes was a fantastic $15 bottle of Syrah. Classic, open, fruit and rocks. Good enough I sought out more (and I’ve purchased all the Cote Roties in a couple of vintages as well).

I’ve had 3 break-one I dropped, 1 broke because of poor placement of a plastic cutting board in the dishwasher, and one because a neighbor kid took a bite out of a Cru because it was so thin and she wanted to see what would happen. So what happened ? Did you know that glass tastes like blood?

Faury St Joseph Vielles Vignes is readily available, around $40, and a great intro to the region. Wine-Searcher has tons of listings for it. Or the standard St Joe is even cheaper and earlier drinking.

I love young Champagne. And I’ve had some stunning examples of older champagne back to the 1980s but no older. I love the nutty oxidative notes. But I also love Sherry from Fino to PX. I think I had a 1985 Charles Heidseick with you once that was kind of an epiphany wine for the type for me.

I know the insert says to wait a couple of weeks, but I didn’t. Just polished off a bottle of the Willamette Cuvee Pinot Noir with my wife. It was incredibly balanced and easy drinking. The nose was cherry, cedar, and a touch of American oak (not sure if it uses that but that’s what I was smelling)...

I have only had one red by him - a 2014 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Santenay Vieilles Vignes Ceps Centenaires that I had early last year and did not find it up to the quality of the whites. My experience with Flannery is that it’s almost never frozen and you can freeze it with no issues. Dry aged meat freezes better, and I believe that is addressed on the Flannery website.
