Re: Which Rioja (between Prado Enea, Castillo Ygay, and LRA 904) would you lay down today and why?

I've decided to branch out from Lopez de Heredia, my go to Rioja producer, and have been reading up on Prado Enea, Castillo Ygay, and La Rioja Alta's 904 bottling. I've had several vintages of the reservas from these producers but don't have a clear idea of which style I prefer. All of the gran res...

Re: US 25% tariff on European wines; 100% "digital" tariff on French products called off for the moment

The 25% tariff went into effect in October, and, as has been reported, wine prices remained fairly stable because importers and the domaines they worked with, together absorbed the hit. This happened before when the Euro went up astronomically and wine prices did not. No doubt, smaller importers an...

As I said, I feel sorry for everyone caught up in this. But saying because of 25% tariff "$20/bottle where before that rose wine was retailed out at $12.00 a bottle" is a statement that doesn't hold up. Sure, there are lots of variables that can affect, but saying "prices were going up anyway" does...

I know that in theory, the "middleman" will absorb some of these cost by cutting their margin, but in control states, where does that start? Long live the corporates! I'm willing to bet at 100%, the rate at which people would switch (even upmarket), would be EXTREMELY high. For those of us geeks that have plenty of wine already, it won't be switching, it will just be halting purchases. My purchases are already way down, partly due to age and inventory, partly du...

I find it interesting to read comments about people "riding out" a 100% tariff. We went through this all many pages back. Yes, if everyone insists on maintaining their current profit margins (in percentage terms) , the retail price would double. But that is a big If and very unlikely. If sales fell by more than 50% after prices double, the middlemen would end up making less mo...

Let's look at some numbers. You want to assume unchanged sales, but no company has unlimited funds to put into inventory. An importer has $100K open to buy, and before tariffs could purchase 500 cases at $200/case. Tariff raise the cost of the wine to $250/case. Now the importer can afford 400 case...

This is up to 100% tariff on all French wine, cheese, and handbags. Wtf. Unless I misread, it's just sparkling wines, not still. I believe they are indicating that sparkling wines are going to get thrown into the mix - making is so the new tariffs will apply to ALL wines from France. Not good.
