Everyone beat me to it. I very, very rarely let the somm pick. I very, very rarely consult the somm at all. But at Frasca, I give a budget and let them choose. It has always served me well. Frasca is one of my favorite restaurants, period.

Wow. Envoyer offering '15 Benetiere for $160/btl. I've never paid more than $75 for Cordeloux and I purchased '11 Dolium on release for $150.

I'm the opposite. Every time I open a 20-year-old Bdx I think I should have waited another decade. I'm not a lover of truly ancient wines, but 1970s / 1980s Bdx are in the sweet spot for me.

'96 Salon is my favorite Champagne ever. And I generally find Salon overpriced and overrated.

This wine is so good. And the 2010 Jamet 'Cote Brune' -- which I drank in Stockholm last summer for a pittance -- was one of the very finest bottles of syrah I've ever consumed.

2017 Kutch Sonoma Coast Chard - Phenomenal wine. Best bottle of the 3 I've opened. On the softer side of Kutch Chard, but this is still quite intense and focused, with lemon cream and faint exotic fruit. No one is making better new-world Chard than Jamie. The wines are very trendy, sure. But they've also improved markedly since Maria Teresa took over in ~2006, and then they had much heralded vintages in 2010 and 2013. This coincided with recent vintages of Giacosa becoming less trendy. A perfect storm for big price appreciation.

Personally I think 2010 is underrated. Of course, everyone loves it, but it may well be the greatest vintage of my lifetime, and I am not sure it is being recognized as such. I totally agree and almost wrote that. 2010's are pretty expensive, and not too easy to find, and pretty universally lauded....

2000 has gone from vastly underrated to properly rated to sort of overrated.

The Chardonnay is the prize for me. Jamie is batting 1.000 so far on his Chards, and I could be wrong but I think Trout Gulch was the source of Jamie's reference-quality 2014 SC Chard.

I bought some of this recently for $50/btl and I buy back-vintage JJP whenever I can find it. They age so gorgeously. They may well be the wine world's best-value ageworthy wines.

Love this thread. I desperately need to make it back to Japan. One of my favorite beverage experiences was the high-end sake pairings at Ryugin in Tokyo. Outrageously expensive but fascinating and delicious. I need to drink it more here.

2011 Schaefer Frohlich ‘Felseneck’ GG yesterday was really good and in a lovely place right now. Ripe fruits, fine minerals, and this has become deeper in the last few years.

Agree with the Lopez de Heredia recommendations. The '81 Bosconia Gran Reserva is phenomenal. But note that there is real bottle variation. I think I've had 2 or 3 majestic bottles and 1 or 2 duds.

It’s a super quick flight to San Sebastián from Madrid or Barca. We did that once. We also did a drive from Barcelona to San Sebastián, stopping in Rioja (Haro) along the way, which was phenomenal.

The Maria Cristina is so great. When we were there several years ago, my wife left her jacket somewhere about 40 minutes away. One of the concierges personally drove to pick it up from her during her off hours.
