Re: Matchstick reduction

Several of the chardonnays I picked up on a recent trip to Oregon have a fair amount of matchstick reduction, which I enjoy, but some of my friends do not. It can dominate the nose by suppressing all the fruit. Should I just plan on giving the wines lots of air before serving?

Re: Official Costco Thread

Picked up the 2017 Kirkland Signature Columbia Valley red blend for $17. This was a pretty phenomenal value, made by the winemaker overseeing Long Shadows. If you see it in your local Costco, give it a try.

Re: Willamette Valley Memorial Day weekend events?

Post-trip report: tl;dr - Spending Memorial Day weekend in Willamette Valley is a great idea and you should do it. Saturday Evening Land (Dundee Tasting Room) - I really enjoyed the whole lineup except for the Gamay which wasn't my style. As a Seattlite who faces 10% sales tax, it was great to be ab...

Nice to meet you Geoff. Enjoy the rest of your adventure.
Thanks for the tip on the Rioja. I managed to call the restaurant and they recommended opening when we arrived instead of decanting ahead of time. Stunning wine.

TN: 1920 Marques de Legarda Abalos Rioja

1920. The first world war has ended. Ink is barely dry on the armistice. Spain is recovering from the flu. This Rioja went into vinification. In short, one of the few Audoze moments I'm likely to have in my lifetime. Served at The Painted Lady in Newberg, Oregon. Nose: truffles for days. A little le...

Re: Willamette Valley Memorial Day weekend events?

Day 1: Evening Land. Didn't love the Gamay. The Pinot was good but maybe trending towards California ripeness. The Chardonnay was reductive and stunning. Antica Terra: they paired their wine with food that was too bold. Everything was great but $110 for an entry level rosé? Really? Eyrie Vineyards: ...

Re: Willamette Valley Memorial Day weekend events?

Thanks for the recommendations everyone. I think I'll focus on Dundee/McMinville on Saturday, and Eola/Salem on Sunday. Rick - I may stop in around lunchtime on Saturday. I've heard good things about your beer. Todd - looking forward to trying your wines late Saturday afternoon. Vincent - sorry to ...

Re: Willamette Valley Memorial Day weekend events?

Oh - this will be my first holiday weekend going through Oregon wine country. How slammed do all the wineries actually get? Is it buzzing/comfortably busy, or does it get slammed like the bigger wineries in Napa? I've only been to Oregon wine country once (for the eclipse in 2017) and everywhere was...

Willamette Valley Memorial Day weekend events?

I'm looking to do a long Memorial Day weekend in the Willamette Valley area, and visit a handful of wineries while I'm there. Walter Scott is partnering with Bethel Heights Vineyard, Cristom Vineyards, Failla Wines, Lingua Franca & Evening Land Vineyards for an "Eola-Amity Block Party", with each wi...

Best way to try aged wine?

I've recently become more serious about laying down wines for future enjoyment (with a 10-20 year time horizon). I've set some cellar targets based on what I enjoy today (e.g., X cases of Burgundy, Y cases of Bordeaux, Z cases of Barolo, M cases of Mosel Riesling, N cases of Oregon Pinot Noir, etc.)...

Re: What bottle of wine did you open today?

2014 Akemi Rioja Blanc. Wishing I'd bought more. It was redolent with peaches and white flowers, and was just the thing to open on the first gorgeous warm sunny day. Paired nicely with grilled shrimp.

Re: Wine Check and Alaska Airlines get 'married'

I accidentally left the strap on the outside on my first trip. Don't be like me. Mine is now held together with a carabiner.

Otherwise it's been a great bag and I'm excited by this news.

Should you buy most of your wine from one place?

I currently buy my wine from a variety of sources, both in-person and over the internet. A colleague of mine has recommended that I consider consolidating all of my purchasing to one local shop to build a stronger relationship and get on their special early-access email lists. I have two shops I cou...

Re: Are wine aerators necessary or just a nice accessory?

I'm a pretty big fan of the Nuance Wine Finer. It aerates the wine just enough, but it really shines in filtering out sediment (the amount it catches is scary sometimes), acting as a no-drip pour spout, and then at the end of the night you put the cap on it and it's basically like putting a cork in ...

Re: Recommended retail store in or around Seattle, WA

+1 to both Pike and McCarthy and Schiering. Esquin is good too but prices are high.

Champion Wine Cellars up in Greenlake is great, but their prices can also be a bit high at times.

Wine Outlet in Interbay is good too, with pretty good prices, though they have a totally random assortment.

Re: The Garagiste Thread (The Great Enabler) Back to Life

I picked up the mystery Chambolle-Musigny for $50 and it would up being Boillot which I was happy with. But $100 was too much for an unknown.

Re: Mold growing on bottles in my wine refrigerator

I'm in Seattle, but this is the first I've had this happen after previously using 4 different (smaller) wine coolers over several years here. My hygrometer just showed up, and sure enough, the RH in the cooler part of the fridge is a whopping 76% at the front, where bottles were less affected. Not s...

Mold growing on bottles in my wine refrigerator

I picked up a 166-bottle Smith & Hanks Dual-Zone Wine Cellar last summer, and quickly filled it with all the wine I wanted to age for the next 5-15 years (anything longer and I'd be more seriously considering off-site storage). Fast forward six months, and I've noticed substantial mold growth on the...
