Re: I suppose I'm a Philistine

I'd also suggest looking for red wine with age on it. The tannins will soften over time; just last week my tannic-averse better half enjoyed some 2007 California Cabernet Sauvignon.

Re: Florence recommendations

I loved loved loved Vini e Vecchi Sapori. Excellent mid-priced lunches and dinners. Several half bottles on the menu. Reservations are basically required, though 48-72 hrs should be plenty of notice. https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g187895-d1110760-Reviews-Vini_e_Vecchi_Sapori-Florence...

Re: Chardonnay Suggestions

I would also suggest trying out Oregon. Their chards have come a long way in the past few years. In addition to the producers mmeyers suggested, I would add Adelsheim, $25 on their website but can be found for less. If you have the budget, get a mixed case or half-case of Oregon chardonnay and organ...

To add one more resto to the mix, I truly loved our 3 hour lunch at Il Centro, located in Priocca. And wherever you end up, try the tajarin. There's also a traditional beef/veal tartare dish. To get you started on producers, Pat Burton created an encyclopedic thread: https://www.wineberserkers.com/f...

Re: Advice for August Piedmont Trip

My .02... 1) Getting around: My wife and I rented a car and brought a Garmin with pre-loaded European maps. (Pro tip: preload your itinerary before you get there.) Having a car was great as we didn't have to depend on a fixed schedule. Caveat: my wife doesn't drink, so she drove one afternoon when I...

Re: Why do old Macallan 18's sell for so much ?

For all the weeping and gnashing of teeth, I had The Macallan Rare Cask a few years back. It was spectacular. Now, $299/bottle spectacular? I dunno. But the bartender giving you a nip for free? Quite spectacular indeed.

Re: Expensive $200+ vs Moderately priced $40-$150 priced wines?

My wine buddies once did a blind tasting of 6 California cabernet sauvignons. Five of them were under $15 (i.e. grocery store mass market) and one was $100. It was amazing how many people could not guess the $100 Cab. I've read more than a few articles about the ability to discern price point in a b...

Re: FedEx question

FEDEX has partnered with Rite Aid/Walgreens drug stores. I have 6 different drug stores within 2 miles of my house. I redirect shipments to these stores. Usually arrive in store by 4:00PM. Oooh - interesting. We have one a couple blocks away. How does it work with those? At the fedex store they hav...

Re: How do you control your alcohol intake?

About 8 months ago, I started using Cellartracker to keep track of my modest cellar. About a month ago, I ran a drinking report and, wow, I'd been drinking a lot! I am the only wine drinker in the household, and it had become easy to drink a whole bottle over the course of the evening. Seeing the da...

The bong was the "Soiree." It was a little fragile, but I think version 2.0 is supposed to be better.

Re: Are wine aerators necessary or just a nice accessory?

I'll bump this. A few years ago, my wine tasting group had an "aerator" night. In addition the Vinturi, we had 3 other aerators that we labeled the "goose," the "bong" and the "catheter." (IIRC the catheter was the VinOair). We tried each aerator on a variety of young (1-3 yrs) and oldish (4-7 yrs) ...

Re: Wine101 Feature: Thoughts on Closeouts/Web Specials on Wine?

I recently found a 2005 Lange Freedom Hill Pinot Noir on the bottom shelf of a liquor store. It was standing up, covered in dust, and still had the original price tag of $24.99. Sometimes you gotta say "what the heck" so I took the gamble.

It was flawless!
