Re: 2017 Quilceda Creek - yay or nay?

One of the greatest value cabs in the U.S. and a very different style from Napa if you are looking for a bit of diversity. 2017 will not be as good of a vintage as 2015 and 2016, but Quilceda always delivers a high quality age-worthy wine. Just pull the trigger.

I think it shows the strength of the 2018 vintage for Zin. All three of the 2018 Bedrocks I have popped thus far have been the best to date vintage for the label.

Re: $300 Chinese Wine Arrives In America

They had this at an event showing off the Moet portfolio about 6 months ago in NYC. It showed poorly and everyone was floored by the ridiculous price. It was equivalent in quality to a $50 Napa cab blend with few defining characteristics. It seems to have a single target audience only: rich Chinese ...

Re: Odd email from Aeris Wines re:2015

I have had a lot of bottle variation the 2014. One was excellent, one was oxidized, one felt more flabby and tired, and three more in the cellar. It definitely colored my ordering going forward. Never had an issue with Rhys.

Re: $175+ is the new $125 in Napa, will market support ?

The next level below the “ultra premium” has not been in the $125 range for at least 5 years. I just checked three of them that I order a case from and none were $125 in 2013: Spottswoode ($185), Continuum ($225), and VHR ($185). Spottswoode is now $210 and the others are $225. Running a bit ahead o...

Re: Why is the level of fervor is uneven: old world versus new world palates...

1. People who enjoy new world wines have so much good wine to choose from that they would rather spend the time drinking instead of complaining on an internet board. 2. There is no need to punch down. Why would you feel the need to dump on others with inferior tastes? 3. Most old world wine is final...

Re: California 2017

I got some email releases for 2017's this week from Quivet and Vice Versa. How bad is the vintage? I haven't seen many reviews. It is not a bad vintage at all. The barrel samples were quite good ... It is a very uneven vintage though. In '16, everything across the board was great. Similar to '15, y...

Never had VHR. So they only make one wine? Bruce (the proprietor) only make a single wine that is meant to be a singular expression of the vintage and vineyard. But Vine Hill Ranch fruit is in a lot of wines you might know. Bond Vecina comes from Block 1 which also goes into the 2016. Araujo, Lail,...

I'm in. The Rhys chardonnays are still cheaper than the best Sonoma chards (PM, Aubert, Kistler) that are all $100 on release. They also quite a bit different from those offerings. And, the pinots are the best California has to offer (imo) and their non-hillside releases are even slightly cheaper th...

Re: "Millennials Now Ruining Wine As Well"

6 months of down sales after decades of tremendous growth means millennials aren't buying wine? That feels like some shoddy analysis to me. Only about a 1/3 of millennials are 10+ years into a career. They are just now getting married or having their first kid. They'll buy expensive wine - a lot mor...

Re: $225-$300 Napa Cabs

I think when talking about the $100-$200+ Cabs you also have to factor in Potential Future Value as some of these wines may be known to increase in value over the years. I think a lot of people are willing to by an expensive wine knowing that they will be either drinking a higher valued wine in the...

At this price range I like Spottswoode, Continuum, VHR (the 2015 was $200), Shafer HSS. $175 - $225 is the sweet spot for Napa cabs right now imho.

Oregon Pinot has so many good options at the high end. There are now dozens of producers now that are making top quality Pinot that deserve a place in your cellar. I’ve always found EMP’s wine list prices to be especially egregious. It looks like they are still charging 5x+ markups on a number of Californian wines that I have in my cellar. For example, a $70 Rhys Horseshoe is listed at $390. It does not appear that markup goes down much at the high-end. So for...
