I think people use the term as a positive or a negative. I generally think of it as a negative. Most likely, if I am picking it up in a wine I have purchased, it'd probably nearer a true flaw. I read a review of the 2005 Colgin IX Syrah by Tanzer with the following quote: "Reticent, wild aromas of black fruits and licorice, with a distinct element of torrefaction" What the heck is torrefaction?

I received a direct email from Justin Smith who said they ran out of the burgundy style bottles that year when they were bottling and had to use the BDX style for some. He said I was probably one of the very few that got both. Justin also generously offered to replace the corked one. First Class

I could not agree more with the two posts above about Kelley Fox Ahurani. It is truly a bargain and the wine is just fantastic. As are all her wines.

I agree with Kirk. These are very much in the style of Cayuse with the funk that comes from the Rocks District. They are mineral driven and not the fruity style of some Cali syrahs. I have found that in my circle people love them or they don't. I think they are more like Northern Rhone. I love them.

Banff Skiing

Has anyone skied in/around Banff/Lake Louise Area? Thinking of staying at Sunshine. Prefer ski in/ski out accommodations. Is it crowded late February-early March. Usually go to Telluride but thinking of trying something different. Any help is appreciated.
