RIP - Jay Hemingway

I don't think I have seen anything about Jay's passing on the board yet. I always enjoyed the Green & Red wines and the man himself. And he led a very interesting life: https://napavalleyregister.com/lifestyl ... 6519a.html.

Re: TN: 2006 R. López de Heredia Rioja Reserva Viña Tondonia

I toured LdH recently (quite trippy and highly recommended) and was informed that all newly coopered barrels are "seasoned" by aging press wine for a couple years that is later sold off on the bulk market. So technically all the LdH wines are 0% new oak.

Re: Saccharomyces cerevisiae in wine making/allergies

It's unlikely that Sc is the culprit if the OP has a worse reaction to whites than reds. Whites are much more likely to have been sterile filtered and therefore had any residual Sc cells removed. Many more reds are bottled unfined and unfiltered and could have some Sc cells floating around. But whit...

Re: DC / VA Distributor Suggestions?

Larry - I assume you got some good recs, but just my two cents: I think it is still the case that DC retailers and restaurants can purchase directly from producers -- even out of state producers. And be careful as VA is a franchise state and they make it onerous to split.

Re: Heading to Australia

When I lived there I found the only things that weren't sent to the US were items like small production Pinot from the Yarra and Mornington, unusual items like "sherry" from the Riverland, really small special bottlings like Henschke Hill of Faith Mataro, and high end Hunter Semillon. But some other...

Re: Dishwasher and Wine Glasses

My GGG just don't sit well in my portable circa 1975 Hobart washer. I've had the best luck with Micro-90 lab glass cleaner and a beaker/flask brush (such as: https://www.coleparmer.com/p/beaker-bot ... shes/48639). The brush really gets the entire interior with ease.

Sending Samples to AWRI - Australia

Anyone ever send samples to AWRI Commercial Services in Australia from the U.S.? If so I'd love to ask you a few questions.

Thanks

Wine ruined by transport?

Just curious how other wines are tasting? I have certainly experienced wines that seem thin and disjointed when tasting at altitude (Minnesota and London vs. Colorado). Not too different from drinking wine while flying. I hope it works out for you.

But 0.04% is well within the margin of error for any sort of trial. And even if they did sweet spot that perfectly, evaporation after the fact would result in a slightly different ABV anyway.

TN: Ridge '14 East Bench Zin - Why bother to add water?

Could be to dissolve the acid that was added.

French Laundry wine list recs

A couple generous friends took me a few weeks ago and the experience was great. Food ranged from excellent to very good and the service was seamless and completely lacked pretension. We did bring a couple old riojas and paid corkage, but also bought the Larmandier-Bernier, Extra Brut, "Rosé de Saign...
