Re: Anthony Bourdain Wine List?

Loved Bourbon. I blame him for the some of the Crazyness that has happened with Pappy. "His enthusiastic encounter with a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle at Stateside, I contend, single-handedly pushed that already-coveted bourbon into nearly unreachable cult whiskey status."

I guess I am surprised I am not seeing Spottswoode consistently in that first growth category. They have it all: longevity, great scores and classic profile.

My First Growth would be as follows:

Shafer Hillside
Ridge M
Spottswoode
Colgin
Harlan
Abreu
Dominus

I have been on the list since 2006. I have never opened an extended aged bottle. With the regular bottling, either drink them young or wait 10 years. I found that at about 10-12 years they really come into their own.

Re: Gigondas is More Enjoyable than Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Fight me!

My answer would be no. Reasons include: 1) Gigondas always seems a little more rustic to me 2) They do not age very long. You really need to be careful how long you cellar them. 3) They don't really improve that much with age 4) I have never had one that remotely came close to a 1998 Donjon or an 89...

Re: Do you double decant before BYO to restaurants?

I often use the slow oxygenation method (#Francous Andouze). Pull the cork in the morning (mostly for younger wines). Taste. If good. Leave open all day. Re-cork before going out. The law in Minnesota is strict for open bottle. If it is in your trunk but you can access it from inside a car, it may b...

I joined the list in 2005. My experience has been that they improve dramatically with age. I had a few of the 2005 recently that were just incredible. I do not like them as much young but many others do. I would say 5-8 years of bottle age is optimal from my perspective. Good luck.
