Agree with 1972, much better than the touted '71. Lots of excellent wines back when Burgundy was affordable.

Re: Calon Segur 1996

The 2000 surely needs more time, and likely more than the 3 years you mentioned. That's why the 1996 is so surprising at this point. One of the best Bordeaux I had in both '16 and '18.

It is at least a problem. Another is that many (most?) end users do not have proper storage themselves. And that, generally at least, staying power is an issue.

I also use both white and Champagne from Zalto, but have yet to try the Universal. I agree with Jay, but I will say that most often company prefers the Champagne. It's a small study which may be largely based on custom or esthetics.

Re: 2016 Les Carmes Haut-Brion --- WTF?!?!

This wine was great in the previous century. I still have some 86's that drink wonderfully now, but unlike a lot of wines from that vintage have been delicious since at least 2000. The '99, from a mediocre year drank well from 2005. But what has happened does not bode well IMHO. I'll be waiting on t...

Re: 2017 Beaujolais

Personally, of the vintages 2012-2016, I find the 2015's least likable. Too ripe and not enough acidity. The few 2017's I've tried, Lapierre and Thivin, are excellent and, I believe, better than the 2016's. No extremes and definitely not overripe.

Wine should taste good, or at least have a taste that is interesting or intriguing. The story (or narrative) is overplayed, maybe even trite at this point. I on't disagree that some on the list are worth trying.

Re: Changes at Troplong-Mondot

The 1990 was "exotic" all right; also virtually undrinkable by this century, with all the worst descriptors: port, raisin, voluptuous etc. My recollection, however, is that the prior years weren't all that good either, just not as rich, alcoholic, overdone.

I think Eric Asimov did an article on Le Puy not terribly long ago. It's a (or at least it was) a Neal Rosenthal import here, and while not inexpensive, a really good value.
