Re: Farr Vintners retastes 2009 Bordeaux 10 years on.

Neal Martin has said he will publish his notes soon. I thought it was interesting that two different tasters (I've seen other participants' blog posts), including the one from Farr, thought that the 2009 Cos was one of the stars of the tasting. I will be interested to see Neal Martin's review, sinc...

Re: Envoyer Thread #2: Everything else

Better than an allocation system based on previous purchases. Why would that be bad? Because it favours whales - the people who can afford to buy things they don't necessarily want in order to enable access to things that they do. It's a virus in the wine trade and has played a significant part in ...

Re: Should I buy lesser ‘16 Bords?

Seems like every Bordeaux thread turns into a bit of a pissing match between Jeff and Alfert. My palate probably leans more towards Alferts if I had to guess. That said, Jeff has likely tasted more Bordeaux than almost anyone on here and has tasted all the modern classics, while the vast majority o...

Re: What is your go to Wine Publication for wine & vintage info?

Vinous is well worth it and by far the best of the “comprehensive” sites. If you drink primarily French and Italian then the gap is even more significant.

Re: The anomaly that is Chateau Palmer.

“Rankings” are personal here as is obvious from all these posts. For me no question as to general preference of LMHB, Ducru, Montrose, PL > Palmer >>> LLC, Lynch Bages. There are a large number of wines implicit in the “>>>” above, particularly if you are talking pre-spoof Bordeaux. Speaking of pre...

Re: Good news! Every single bordeaux in 2016 is perfect!

I read and enjoyed Neal Martin’s report but left without understanding the best historical analogue in terms of vintage style. Martin obviously thinks highly of the vintage but quite clearly contrasts it with 2010 (bigger, darker, higher octane) as well as the more fruit forward duo of 2009 and 2015...

Cellar Tracker archetypes

1) guy who only drinks trophy bottles and rates them all below 94 points.

2) new sommelier guy who only drinks wines you’ve never heard of and gives them highly variable and unpredictable scores. 300 tasting notes in 3 months and then never heard from again.

TN: 2014 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

Exhibits a classic nose of lead pencil, camphor, cassis and black fruits. Mid-weight on the palate, nice range of darker fruits but fresh, crisp. No Pichon Lalande herbaceous note or bell peppers, but perhaps that comes out with time. Overall shows a cooler vintage profile than what we have seen wi...

New buyers are going to be paying a lot more for their fine wine.

Everyone talks their book to some degree but some are more elegant than others. Obviously, Martin has been a bit inelegant by comparing a couple of low cost producers that he sells (without previously disclosing that fact) to perfectly aged first growths. Mark has been slightly more elegant, but loo...

My gut feel is that we only see the tip of the iceberg with these kinds of stories. The 85/15 rules for multi-vintage blending seem a ripe target for misbehavior.

Euclid is fine but not exceptional. Great atmosphere but the food won't blow you away. I like the Populist a lot--but not as good for a solo traveler as the tasting menu is the best order and requires two. Osteria Marco in Larimer Square has a great rabbit dish, decent wine list and is laid back. Su...

I don't particularly care one way or the other about Hirsch editing his posts. So he saved $1k per $10k invested over three years? That seems a ...

Loved the theory (due credit Hirsch I believe) that this is fueled in some part by PC trying to liquidate in-stock inventory at above market prices via trade-ins. Alas, probably not entirely true. Some enterprising wine trader should offer to consign a couple hundred cases of $25 AFWE wines (Produtt...
