Tipping in tasting rooms

Even worse at Michigan’s newest winery that just opened a couple weeks ago on Old Mission Peninsula. We tasted 5 wines at the ‘tasting bar’ and purchased 2 bottles, retail. I was presented with a “I-Pad” type device to pick the tip percentage I wanted to leave. The tab included the retail sale. Thi...

2005 Chateau La Rose Brisson Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

Dan, The last I remember you bringing in was the 1998 which I liked quite a bit. If you aren't bringing it in now... where did you find it. Probably in France, hey?

Michigan New Winery (Bonobo) on OMP

Bonobo Winery on MI's Old Mission Peninsula is now open for business. This is owned by Carter Oosterhouse and brother Todd. Carter, originally from Traverse City, is well known for TV shows remodling houses and his wife Amy Smart (actress) reside in CA but Todd still lives in T City and is the GM at...

TN: 30+ wines in Michigan

I agree with everyone on the Left Foot Charley Pinot Blanc. Like Steve, I've been drinking cases of this wine for several years now. Due to the hard winter of 2013-14 there will be much less than previous years (and it always sells out early). And I guess that sorta answers John question about "how ...

Martin Ray, post-1976

I can't add anything to what's already been posted about the vineyard but I can say that one of my most memorable wines was a 1978 Martin Ray Cab. It was with dinner with several friends in D.C. around 1994 or 1995 and I remember it well.

Two Great Rhones (1 north, 1 south)

Over the past week we had 2 outstanding Rhones with interesting differences. Both were decanted for a short time then drunk as they developed over the evening. 1998 Domaine du Pegau Cuvee da Capo – Very dark and young looking for a 15 year old CdP with intense aromas and flavors that you would expec...

Sounds like you should visit. I think you would find a lot of changes.

Fledgling MI Winery 10 year retrospective

This past Saturday Left Foot Charley opened the winery for a little party of friends and family with the following wines being poured from their library. There wasn’t a dog in the bunch but I will only comment on a few. 2004 Riesling dry – Seguin Farm OMP from Magnum (Last one known in existence). H...

Michigan. BYO now allowed

Gary, the bigger opportunity may be those without beer/wine licenses who realize they can grow their customer base this way. No, the bill makes it clear that it only applies to restaurants WITH a liquor license. There is one restaurant taking advantage of the new law by advertising they welcome BYO...

Michigan. BYO now allowed

It’s been two months since Michigan’s HB 5046 (allowing BYOB) went into effect and in Traverse City, where I live, many of the restaurants are fighting it fairly hard. Some are simply saying NO while others are OK but charging as much as $30 and one at $45. I hesitate to give names here because I th...

TN: 2012 Commanderie de la Bargemone Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence Rosé

Bargemone has been my bench mark and go-to Rose for close to 20 years now. I first had it as Vignes du Soleil (in a wildly painted bottle) at a wine dinner with Dan Kravitz. Meeting Dan that evening was the start of what was to become a second career of selling his wine portfolio. Visiting Bargemone...

Thoughts on 2005 Ch Griviere, Medoc?

Anyone have experience with 2005 Chateau Griviere, Medoc? A local retailer just picked some up and I tried one. It was somewhat rough on day one but showing promise. Day two it was pretty darn nice and even better on day three. I think it’s a good buy at $17.99 (MI retail) but interested in any inpu...

Summer 2014 rose help

I’m a big fan of good Rose and have a strong preference for Provence. Here’s a few of my favorites. Commanderie de la Bargemone, Coteaux D’Aix en Provence – My ‘benchmark’ and go-to Rose for many years. And the great news is availability in a 3L bag-in-box. Chateau des Annibals, Coteaux Varois en Pr...

Left Foot Charley 2013 Pinot Blanc released

I know there are a few folks out there (besides me) who have become fond of Left Foot Charley’s Pinot Blanc from Michigan’s Old Mission Peninsula, Island View vineyard. This is just to let you know it has been released and is limited. I suggest anyone who’s interested should order soon. They also ju...

2001 Pegau is starting to sing

Any bretty bottles? Had a case each of '89 and '90. When on they were awesome, but stopped buying after those 2 vintages as I was tired of the Russian roulette. No but I don't mind a bit of bret. I'm drinking mostly 98 & 01's currently and have had mostly great bottles. I did find a couple off bott...

Hi, Gary. How are you liking your new digs? Will be back there in about seven weeks. And, I have a bunch of 2001's so we can share the fun. Hi Steve, We really do like T City. The record breaking snow and cold didn't change anything. You will have to come by and see the place when you get back to M...

2001 Pegau is starting to sing

I've been watching this wine develop since release and it continues to get better and better! Dark garnet color with lots of sediment and crust on the bottle. It has that beautiful (to some of us) nose of saddle leather and roast beef. Dark fruits of blackberry & cherry with black pepper, spices alo...
