Re: Hybrid wine shops/bars - Vinepair article

I owned a very successful hybrid shop like this for 5 years (I sold it to be more of a dad). We were set up as a bar, with all wines stored in two active cellars. Wines were priced on the list in two categories (to-go and in-store), with a standard $9 difference on all bottles. This meant that a $25...

Re: WOTYs--2019 Edition--and your Discovery of the Year

It's been a tremendous wine year, but these three candidates for WOTY were all amazing:

1945 Haut Brion
1985 Valentini Trebbiano
2010 Roulot Meursault Perrieres

Discovery for me was Enfield, who is making consistently stunning wines at fantastic value.

Re: What wines do you plan on opening on New Years Eve?

We have a great group of friends with deep cellars coming over to share food and wine, so I stood up the only bottle I have of 1969 DRC Romanee Conti. It came from a cellar that has been variable, producing both complete duds and the 2017 wine of the year for our group (a simply unreal 1961 Trotonoy...

I stumbled across some 1994-1996 Thunder Mountain a couple of years ago. In addition to having the greatest wine label ever, the wines were absolutely delicious. That vineyard, from the old SCMV wines to now, has consistently produced some of the best Cabernet that I have had. Great call. As always,...

I had an interesting experience tonight. Opened two Girardin whites (375's), an 05 Puligny VV and an 05 Corton Charlemagne. Here’s an unusual one - the NV Cab. It’s a combination of the 66 and 69 vintages. It’s the second from left in the attached photo. Nice. I have a similar NV Cab from the 80's. I think it's 85-87 but I can't quite recall. The exact vintages were not on the bottle, only that they were lighter vintage...

Thank you Sean & Ryan. I bought a parcel of older Ridge bottles and thus far have opened a 75 York Creek Cabernet (corked, doh!) and a 1981 Paso Robles Zinfandel (very pretty, got better as it opened). These came from a very cold cellar, so I am hopeful that the William Short has had the stuffing to...

The wines can be fantastic. I have had the 1978 on numerous occasions and it remains a benchmark for aged California Cab. The winery has an extensive library at very fair prices. I also had an older merlot (86, I think) that was lively and complex. A gem you don't hear enough about.
