Re: is this the end of byo culture?

It’s probably easier (in a relative sense) for a BYO to switch its business model to takeout/carry out then it is for a restaurant that counted on its wine/liquor program to help cover costs and generate all of its profit. BYOs are also not sitting on an inventory of alcohol.

The Reddit post strips away any rationalization that our cellars represent an “investment”. It is also exactly what I would love to show someone after I made a (lowball) offer for their cellar. [snort.gif]

Re: Forbes Article about MacDonald Brothers

Given that Alex has said in the past that they pay the family for the grapes used for MacDonald, I am hopeful that they can manage the cash flow issues related to taking over the Constellation volumes (I would think it is a matter of timing rather than the price Constellation pays).

As of 2019, if your restaurant achieves (or had achieved) the #1 ranking, it is “elevated” to the “best of the best” list (I guess it is their equivalent of the HoF) and the restaurant no longer appears in the ordinary list. I agree that it makes the 50 best list less relevant (but still fun to peru...

Re: What is YOUR most recent wine purchase?

Went to the Fairchild event in NYC and ended up purchasing 3 paks of the ‘16 Stones #3, the ‘17 GIII, and a ‘17 Chardonnay (I regret to say I can’t recall the vineyard). These “complementary” events always turn out to cost a lot of money. Had a great dinner at the Modern afterward.

My friend graciously shared a 1974 Chateau Montelena Cabernet with us last night. A wonderful experience- the fruit had faded completely, leaving behind a smooth wine with aromas of lanolin/saddle soap and a hint of talc. Enjoyed over an hour and wine maintained its flavor and aroma throughout.

I have purchased from them on one occasion- they were the only U.S. retailer that had a particular wine I was looking for. No problems with the transaction (haven’t opened the wine yet, but bottle looked fine and it is not pricey enough to be fake).

I was at the NY event last night and my experience mirrored that of Tom. The ‘17 Bard was excellent and ready to drink with a few hours of air; the Houyi was also great. I totally agree with the comment on the Absurd (which I have purchased and tasted) - it was really tight and not showing its full ...

Expensive day - 3 bottles of the ‘17 Carter
3 Maxem ‘17 UV Pinot Noir
5 different ‘17 Bevans.

I trust all 3 winemakers not to offer any wines they did not feel good about (as far as smoke taint or heat).

If I am going to a place that I frequent, I will always double decant a wine that I know needs the time to breathe or will throw sediment; if I am going someplace new, I just bring my aerator with built in screen (and hope for the best).

Had an excellent meal at Avra Madison on Saturday. $40 per bottle corkage, with a 2 bottle limit and if one brings a wine that is on their list, the corkage = their list price. I solved that problem by bringing a 2010 MacDonald and a 2012 Kapcsandy Rapszodia 😁
