I hold pretty tight to a 2 grand limit per year. We have no mortgage, no children to school, and a stable 200 grand retirement income. I could spend more but don’t get enough pleasure from higher priced bottles to justify. I have gotten more willing to open up the purse strings for the vintage ports...

I strongly advise taking advantage of the futures tasting events. They tend to show really well on release. Then shut down. Then gradually start opening up again. Then continuing to improve. This. I live nearby the Santa Cruz vineyard and have passed on tasting invitations. I should get my lazy but...

Set a budget! Allow yourself to go over by 10% then-Stick to it. There are many great offers and they come fast. Take advantage of good deals on exploration wines, varieties that you have wanted to try or grapes you are unfamiliar with. If you like beef, Flannery’s is awesome.

Martin Ray Santa Cruz Mountain Cabernet 1995. Bought from winebid and was everything I want from a well aged cab, velvety mouth feel, great blend of fruit and forest floor. The best red wine I have had in several years.

Theirs reminds me of my journey into Scotch whiskey. Very few of my friends in my 20s would consider drinking the stuff with descriptions like, “iodine” and “left over campfire”. And it is true to a point. One has to want to like Scotch to enjoy it and many wines are like that. Some take more effort...

What would be the point? If there is no alcohol, there is no wine. It is the reason for wine. I don’t drink wine to get drunk but I do enjoy the social and physical buzz. I wouldn’t bother otherwise.
