Wine Pairing -- Korean Food

This is the kind of thing that orange wine is great for. My partner is thinking the same thing. Orange wine or a Sauterne. Even a slightly sweet Vouvray. I think the trick is to pair either with the BBQ meat or with the sides. We eat stuff on the hotter side so we tend to favor sweeter wines for ho...

Wine Pairing -- Korean Food

Opinionated Korean here leans towards sweeter whites like the original recommendation of Gewurz or something Auslese. It's a go to for really hot Korean or Thai food at our house and a **great** balance to soured kimchi. (I don't like my kimchi too fresh. It's too bland. The cabbage has to start tur...

Wine shop recommendations in Baltimore or Bethesda MD?

Depends on what you want to drink. Bassins/MacArthur is great. If you were going for Good Friday, Blacksalt next door has great seafood. (It's a fish market during the day.) Weygandt Wines is off the red line in DC and specializes in Burgundies, but Peter the owner is branching out to many other are...

POTUS and FLOTUS liked Minibar for Valentine's Day and I guess it's gotten better since the lackluster reopening review: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/going-out-guide/wp/2013/02/15/obama-picks-minibar-for-romantic-valentines-day-dinner/?wprss=rss_local They seat 12 now. Best to call them on Fe...

Re: Why the fuss over "clones"?

Caveat: I am not a wine maker or botanist. I infer the meaning of clones in this context, but I'm still not sure if we're talking about cuttings propigated from one plant or about different individuals of the same genus and species, like people. I am assuming propigation from cuttings. Nor am I a sc...

Re: Half Bottles, Pro vs. Con

I'm curious what vintners fill the 375mL screwcaps people are using. I shiver at the thought of consuming a 4-pack of Sutter Home just to have some screw cap small format bottles...

Re: good restaurant in Wash DC

I was at Proof tonight. The best part is the knowledgeable sommeliers there. They have given us spot on recommendations for wine, and the charcuterie board is impressive for $30. (Cheese are separate, but worthwhile. Get the Tallegio and La Tur. Be sure to try the applesauce and honey.) We didn't re...

Re: Napa trip questions

I love Mustards. The pork chop has been consistently amazing for 10+ years. :-) I haven't been to Bistro Jeanty in ages, but I loved the cassoulet there. Had lunch there with a half-French guy and he said it was very authentic cassoulet. If you decide on Sonoma, try the Dry Creek General Store for a...

Re: Total Wine & More fail

Their affiliated stores in Maryland have started undercutting Montgomery County for liquor prices. MC used to beat the stores local to Columbia and Clarksville but did come comparisons over the weekend and Corridor had them beat by 10%+. Interesting and good to know. TW corporate HQ is in Potomac M...

Re: Stemware! Seriously?

Newbie here posting, but I'll weigh in. Yes, have multiple glasses and the bowl shape matters. That being said, I don't invest a lot in stemware. I'd rather buy wine. Remember that whenever you are tempted to buy whole sets of expensive stuff. White wine - Chardonnay shape seems to work well for jus...

Re: Washington DC

I just celebrated 5 yrs with my partner at Bibiana. Corkage was $35. We took a crazy wine from the Villa of Mysteries in Pompeii. No idea where he got it, but it wasn't from any local wine places here in DC.
