Re: Getting into the business: finding good harvest internships

Thanks for the bump, guys.
I'm still around if anyone has questions.

A lot of it has to do with sensible expectations, but for those of you who have actually been through it, you know it's the unexpected challenges that are the real speed bumps.

RIP Richard Sauret

Richard Sauret (Sauret Vineyard, Paso Robles) died last night around 10:30 pm in an auto accident on Highway 101.

Paso Robles is in mourning today. He was a pioneer, a friend, an all-around great guy, and a beloved mentor to many.

What is the scam? U ship them wine and their credit card declines? What do scam artists want with some cases of wine? They never pick up the wine. They want you to pay for the "shipping fees" up front, usually $1,200 to $2,000 -- they keep that and are gone. Here's my 5-part series on the scam: Ins...

Perhaps too much of a good thing? Definitely. And too little action by the locals. Many want to place the entire blame on local planning departments and bureaucracies, and I can't blame them! But it all really boils down to individuals--you've got to care enough to take action before it's too late....

Yes, I was going to say a dry-aged elk with a Bing cherry sauce (goes with the WA theme as well). Or duck breasts with a mild wasabi sauce. (Lots of ducks here and fresh wasabi farms on the coast). I find that fresh black peppercorn really brings out the fruit in WA cabs and Bdx blends, so work that...

That was a good choice.

I wouldn't recommend vinegar, it's an excellent cleaning solution (I use it in my toilets) but ... acetic acid.

TSP is also an affordable and available cleanup product, especially if you have drywall or wood that soaked up wine or beer.

I remember Ken Volk owned 'Santa Lucia' as a brand name but I think it was Santa Lucia Winery. He would never have put 'Burgundy' on a bottle and he had to drop the Santa Lucia name, which was his first choice, when these guys sued him. That's how 'Wild Horse' was born.

Yes, probably corked. TCA exists on a long, long spectrum from an insipid, dusty wine (that you know should be lively and flavorful) to mouse fur and aluminum. +1 on what Thomas K and Tom Hill shared, and others on aromatics. It's my understanding that the floral elements of the viognier help boost the syrah's natural floral character - you wouldn't pick up on the viognier itself. Instead, the violet/lavender notes of the syrah would be heightened. Also, t...
