Re: Bilbao, San Sebastian, Rioja this Fall

We were there last and loved Rekondo....killer wine list. I had a 1976 Chambertin for a great price.

Also ate at Martin Berasatagui and Arzak....of the 2, Martin was quite a bit better. Food everywhere is killer.

Can you hold it that long if I pay ahead?

Is it possible that they indentified you as a boor when you walked in, and thus gave you the ugly American menu? I have no clue where you went, whether you checked out their wine list in advance, or whether you know anything about French wine - I seem to recall you posting mostly about California w...

Is decanting or slow-oxing ever really a good thing for old a fragile wines? I would rather open and let it unfold in front of me.....or die. I would hate to get to it after its 'moment' has left. Had a bunch of old Borgogno, although never the 64. Stand up for a month, double decant 5-6 hours, and enjoy its evolution over the next few hours. This has worked well for the 47, 58, and 61 on multiple occasions. Don't worry about the long decant! They really need several hours to come out of the...
