Interesting piece on Pro Publica about loopholes that have worked for previous tariffs: https://www.propublica.org/article/how-trump-tariffs-are-creating-jobs-for-canadians Not sure if this will/can be employed by online wine retailers, but seems feasible. I don’t think it will work for wine becaus...

Re: US to impose 25% tariff on European wine, cheese, etc.

Yes, I'm sure his is authentic, and quantities are always very limited. I find the whole olive oil fraud depressing (most is not even really olive oil), but the specific fraud regarding Italian (especially Tuscan) olive oil is just weird. I've had oils from Lebanon, Spain and other places that were...

Re: US to impose 25% tariff on European wine, cheese, etc.

At VinItaly several years ago, a well-known, higher-end olive oil merchant was boasting that he "sources" from the finest, family-run, hand-harvested olive groves in Italy. His stated volume sounded large, relative to those small groves. I asked if those groves grow and extract all their own oils, ...

Yeah, I have been saying this for forever. Italy does not produce enough olive oil for its own consumption. They buy Spanish Olive Oil, blend it, bottle it in Italy and sell it as Italian Olive Oil. I doubt anyone here wants to buy EVOO in 20 liter bottles, bags or containers right? Easier to bring it in in 1000 liter palletanks and bottle here. I just need to finish up the infrastructure and partners.

Does anyone know how: 1) Italian wines bought in other markets are tariff'd? I think your math seems off. Let us say wine sold from France to US for $10. Wholesaler sells to retailer for $15. Retailer sells for $20 (wouldn’t this be low retailer markup?). Wouldn’t tariff be $2.50. So, it would not be 25% of retail, would it? And, why would it be fair for the retailer and cu...

Seems like a reasonable resolution might be to split the tariff between retailer and customer even if customer is free and clear legally. 25% seems like it would wipe any profit out, but half that might make it feasible to stay afloat while still making a sliver of profit in a bad situation. When I...

An importer generally increases her price to at least 33% over her cost. The importer pays all duties and fees associated with the shipment. Then she sells to the wholesaler at the price x. Those duties will be passed on to the wholesaler and then on to the retailer and ultimately to the consumer. S...
