Re: Help needed: Napa/Sonoma trip with a twist

Pat - when is the fall visit with the students? Might be a challenging time for winemakers to devote much time during harvest. Some of the bigger wineries might be better candidates as they have more hands on deck during harvest. The visit in the Fall will be in November, just before Thanksgiving.

Help needed: Napa/Sonoma trip with a twist

Greetings all, I will be assisting a colleague in teaching a course on the chemistry of wine in the fall. As part of the course, we will travel to the Napa/Sonoma area for several days to do some hands on learning. The course will have about eight students and two faculty. In preparation for this tr...

Re: How did your tastes in wine change?

I actually started keeping a cellar history breakdown in 2012 that I update every six months to keep track of the 'balance' in my cellar. In 2012, my collection was 80% red, and 39% of all wine was from the US. Today, I'm at 63% red and only 6.5% of my collection is from the US. The main areas of gr...

Re: Accessible Barolo Vintages

Lots of good comments above. It does vary depending on your personal preference. Here's my take on recent vintages: 2014 - Needs time - mixed results - some great wines, some producers faced massive loss (e.g. 70% at Rinaldi) which appears to have affected quality. Some (e.g. Brovia) blended their ...

I'd love to hear more on the 89 Meyney. From memory only ´cause I don´t have my notes on hand: Last September, fully mature but still strong (from my cool cellar), light bricking rim, dark center, very typical St.Estephe, masculine, ripe Cabernet fruit, soft mature textures still with a nice bite, ...

Re: Is "Never drink a Bordeaux that is less than 20 years old" just a silly idea.

Simply it depends! There are a lot of minor Cru Bourgeois that are fine (in a good vintage) between 10 and 15 years ... not likely to get better afterwards ... but others - I just name Sociando-Mallet, Potensac, Phelan-Segur, Chasse-Spleen, Meney, Poujeaux ... - that are still excellent after 25+ y...

IMO, that quote wasn't made with Cru Bourgeois in mind. You mean this quote from the OP? Re: Success with leaking corks, but sound wine?

For me, I've had typically good success. However, the wines in question are almost always from producers known for over-filling the bottles. If it were me, it would depend on a few factors. First, if the leakage is recent, and I planned to open it soon anyways then I would just keep it. Second, how ...
