Re: Winery tour in Bordeaux

Planning a 2-3 day tour in Bordeaux in early April with my wife. Are there any good winery tour programs that you recommend? I did one in Burgundy about 5 years ago and I think I got ripped off--the tour guide took us to 3rd tier domaines. Hi Paul. Be careful with appointments in Bordeaux in early ...

Re: Should I buy lesser ‘16 Bords?

Yes, the 2016s at the satellite level generally have soft ripe tannins and are quite voluptuous like the 2009s were at Primeur. But the 2016s do not have as much weight of alcohol as the 2009s (especially on the Right Bank). Castillon, Fronsac, Listrac, Moulis and Graves should be good for drinking ...

Re: Is France Safe for Travel

In relative terms to other countries I think France is very safe. I can understand the frustration of interfering with travel plans, as we have had an intermittent train strike earlier this year and now the 'Gilets Jaunes' revolt. But after a while you just get used to it and work out a way to make ...

2017 Bordeaux En Primeur

I am looking forward to taste the 2017s next week in Bordeaux. it is always an interesting week of hard work and a lot of fun. The best thing is to simply taste the wines and make your own opinions. There are always some early scores or comments thrown into the mix, but backing your own judgement is...

Beaune in September

The choice is enormous. However wine tourism in Burgundy is very different from Bordeaux or other places. Most of the producers will be hands on during the harvest. Check out the Beaune Tourist office for links and maps. Worth visiting a negociant such as Jadot or Bouchard in the centre of Beaune to...

Europe wine travel questions

I'd agree with Tracy Thurling above. Beaune is a beautiful ancient town to visit, and is gradually waking up to people visiting. I think a blend of visiting some big name negociants such as Bouchard or Jadot with a few visits to smaller family growers gives you a good overview. The restaurants in an...

TN: 2014 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste

I agree with William that GPL '14 was very youthful last week, when tasted blind amongst other '14 Pauillacs. 2014 GPL is definitely a classic year after over ripe 2009 and amazing 2010. However in the blind tasting I rated Fort de Latour, Pichon Lalande, Pichon Baron and Lynch Bages higher than GPL...

Bordeaux -- On your own or hire a guide?

Hello Brian and Michael Firstly Brian....many thanks for alerting me to this thread. I am sorry that I have not checked in with the Wine Berserkers forum recently. Secondly Michael....as far as I can see the last email exchange we had was in a January 2015 when I was recommending a friend of mine in...

New wine book

Mike Steinberger is undoubtedly a good journalist, but he is way of the mark with Bordeaux. I am getting sick of people knocking the Bordeaux wines and region.

Re: Diversity of Languedoc Roussillon

Thanks Robert and Greg. It is fun and interesting seeing these kind of grapes and tasting them. There is a block of Listan planted interspersed with Grenache in a vineyard near my house. In fact many of the old plantings (60 year old and more) were several different grape varieties within one block....

Diversity of Languedoc Roussillon

Today I came across some incredible weird and wonderful grape varieties that I had never heard of before. I wrote about them http://bellawines.blogspot.com/. The Languedoc Roussillon area really has some special treats. Have you ever tried a Listan, or a Caladoc?

The other Bordeaux

I was showing some very pleasant American clients from a cruise liner around various Chateaux last weekend in the Bordeaux area. We visited some of the top Chateaux, but we also had a hunt around for some less known Chateau such as Chateau de la Riviere in Fronsac and Chateau Falfas in Bourg. I wrot...

Re: Was 2000 the last vintage of classic Bordeaux?

I think the definition of classic is probably more important. Apologies if I maligned the '93 and '94's in my earlier post. From my experience and tasting I have just found too many troughs and not enough peaks from those vintages. The most interesting 1994 was Vieux Chateau Certan...but tasted quit...

Re: French "Foires aux Vins" begin...with Bdx prices close to EP

That is an interesting link to the EP versus current prices. It shows that you have to be far more selective buying EP. The figures are irrelevant if you just buy to drink and enjoy. But they could be worrying if you buy speculatively and you buy a wine that has depreciated significantly!!

Re: Was 2000 the last vintage of classic Bordeaux?

Mike, I am not sure that 2000 was the last classic Bordeaux vintage. I think that we have been truly spoiled in the last 11 years for excellent quality Bordeaux. The real peaks have obviously been 2000, 2005, 2009 and 2010. But selectively 2003 can also be excellent. The 2001, 2004 and 2006 will off...
