Hotels, Restaurants in Vienna

Going for the first time in October.

Any recs would be greatly appreciated - thanks!

Well, I’ve only been once and stayed in a hostel, so i’m not much help.

But, what I can tell you is if you’ve got a day, do this: Grape Grazing Wine Tasting Tour
http://www.grapegrazingtour.com/index.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

One of the top 3 highlights of my backpacking trip through Europe. They drive you from Vienna to the Wachau, there you pick bikes and ride through the valley’s vineyards - truly amazing, can’t miss stuff.

Enjoy your trip.

Thanks Blake - we are actually all set in the Wachau.

Cheers.

Kim Kocht. 6 or 8 tables, two seatings a night. Vienna meets Korea. Well thought out, interesting, well-priced wine list to boot. Book well in advance. Not to be missed.

Also, the best restaurant in Vienna (Austria?) is Steirereck in the Vienna stadpark. Michelin ** and fantastic food, beautiful room.

The former chef of Steirereck, Helmut Osterreicher, has opened a casual and very good gasthaus in the applied arts museum, the MAK. Osterreicher im MAK.

Meinl am Graben. Excellent restaurant above the Meinl gourmet shop.

Restaurant Walter Bauer.

Thanks Mark!

Any hotel recs?

Ray

The Sacher, Imperial, and Bristol are all quite luxurious and well located. Costly, too. I’m partial to the Sacher, across the street from the Opera. Le Meridien is less costly and still well located. We’ve also stayed at the Das Tyrol, which is located a couple of blocks from the museumsquartier, and is more cost-efficient. DO & CO overlooks St. Stephens and is modern and trendy. Haven’t stayed there, but have eaten a better than expected small plates dinner. Vienna is a favorite of ours. Great subway. Easy to get around. Lots of great art. And food. Really, a lovely city. October should be perfect.

sounds great - thanks again!

We stayed at The Bristol. Beautiful hotel. Close to everything. If you’re taking the train from the airport, the hotel is at the exit. No need to search around (if you walk out of the right exit).

We took the train to Melk, then a boatride on the Danube (not blue by the way). [grin.gif] The scenery was stunning, as was the wine. It was my first experience with Prager. [winner.gif]

Both Steiereck and Osterreich im Mak are well worth it—Steiereck is very high end, and priced that way, but sensational service and the imaginativeness of the dishes is exquisite. Plus, don’t worry about smaller portions, because you will happily fill up on some of the best bread it’s been my pleasure to consume. I think I had a veal meatloaf at Osterreich which was super-yummy (I went to Steiereck with Michael Pronay—he’s really the guy to ask).

Figlmuller’s is truly all they say it is—the best Wiener Schnitzel you’ll ever eat.

I stayed at the Kaiserin Elisabeth which had a good room at a decent rate but wasn’t thrilled about the service or how aggressive they were in trying to sell you stuff at the concierge, etc.

A friend of mine who does a lot of traveling and knows her quality stays at the Bristol whenever in Vienna. She hasn’t been disappointed yet.

Don´t know what type of hotel you prefer, but both Hiltons are conveniently
located, the Hilton am Schottenring better than the other one. Also, the Marriott,
the SAS Raddisson and the Meridien. Look them up on http://www.hrs.at" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; to get a feel for
the prices.

A few wine bars in Vienna ?

The best wine card in Austria, and the best wine cellar (and the most expensive) is the Palais
Coburg
. The Restaurant above is also very good. Also a hotel, but extremely expensive: http://www.coburg.at" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Eulennest, Himmelpfortgasse 13 http://www.eulennest.at" onclick=“window.open(this.href);return false;
Vis-a-vis http://www.weibel.at” onclick=“window.open(this.href);return false;
Unger & Klein Gölsdorfgasse http://www.ungerundklein.at” onclick=“window.open(this.href);return false;
Tinto Rosso, Karl-Lueger-Platz http://www.tintorosso.at” onclick=“window.open(this.href);return false;
Winetime, Zollergasse http://www.winetime.at” onclick=“window.open(this.href);return false;
Meinl am Graben-Weinbar(below the Gourmet supermarket) http://www.meinlamgraben.at” onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If you are going to the Wachau you are probably all set for Austrian wine, if not the the “Heurigen”,
local very inexpensive Restaurants/Bars that sell the wine that they produce. They are only
open a few months a year, a detailed schedule is found at http://www.heurigenkalender.at" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Have fun !

We stayed here several years ago. On the ring, so the tram stops out front which makes it a very convenient location. Great rooftop breakfast for Honors members as well.
