TN: 1978 Vietti Barbera d’Alba

TN: 1978 Vietti Barbera d’Alba. A testament, for sure, of the power of the 1978 vintage in Piedmont! This is still alive! An aged Burgundy look alike with mushroom, decayed leaves, sweet fruit liquor, a hint of truffle…….damn if this isn’t a surprise. A touch sour at the end. I wish I brought this to an Italian wine dinner I am attending next week, but I figured this wasn’t even worth bringing as a second bottle - more fool I. Picked up at auction for something like $20 or so. Not a wine to chase, but I love it when on old lady performs above expectations – thanks, Mrs. Robinson! A solid 88 points.

Let me say, a more than solid 89 points, this wine has filled out and sweetened with air.

Thanks for this. I love finding older wines that “shouldn’t” still be good but are. Anyone know if Scarrone fruit would have been in this bottling?

Wow, Drew, do you also wait a few days before you eat your pizza too? [tease.gif]

If you think it will perform as nicely as this Barbera, I may just try it.
