After the last couple of offers, I think we need a bit more full disclosure before completely jumping on board, i.e you have wines selling for 30% or more below the absolute lowest price seen online, and it makes one wonder what the catch is. The scenarios that pop to mind which give me pause are (1) wine lots of dubious provenance, (2) Sierra Carche-type situations and (3) wines which, while not total bombs ala S. Carche, just have not panned out after initial big scores and are not moving for this reason. Anyone else have misgivings...if it sounds too good to be true, is it so in this case? How can they manage such a wafer-thin margin?

there are oceans of great deals out there to be had these days. If you like the wine, have no misgivings and buy it.
when the economy fully recovers, then the deals will not be so sweet (unless they are all aussie wines).

This depends on the audience that you are attracting. Read the "complaints" on Gary's cinderella site about offering the conterno wine. He needs to appeal to the masses.
The conterno was a bargain, I mean bargain. and people complain that it is a $100 wine.
No doubt, Dan, the Conterno wasn't for everyone, although I jumped on it, and the FS isn't for everyone, but I think strictly speaking about the scores, there may be some people encouraged to buy when presented with the 93+ JR alongside what may be seen as an inflated DRJ score.

I just got 3, and I think it would be fun to do a Cinderella offline. Everybody bring a bottle from Cindy. I bet we would have some interseting QPR's that are food friendly. Thanks GV!

Nate,
Do you know much about TWL? Casting out misguided accusations about provenance/storage is not the right direction to go in on this one. Gary certainly has the size and market pull to negotiate hard with a distributor, get a killer price on 50-100cs of wine they want to move, and put it out there and have it disappear in a day. Even if he makes nothing on these wines, I'm sure the traffic driven to the site pays for itself in other ways for him.
Wait to you see what we have in store for tonight, tonight will have everyone talking!

Talking about how bad the wine is maybe. Aussie shiraz?

I started out thinking "well, I don't need any Shiraz, period." And I went to bed without buying.
Overnight it hit me, this is exactly the sort of wine my wife needs to take to her choir rehearsals. She loves a "rich" red, inexpensive. And I can get this without even driving to a wine shop. So I got some after all. I think it's good to take to, say, an informal party where the guests are not too wine savvy.
Glad it was still available this morning.

I'm always looking for "book club wine" I hate it when they drink my good stuff.

The site is down, what was the offer this time? Not like I really need to spend more money as someone generously shared a couple bottle of conterno with me at the ridiculous price.
Gary, when my wife files for divorce, I'm blaming you..

No question it was a bargain, and for a great wine. It's the only one that interested me at all thus far.
The bad comments (I didn't see them) reflect what I said early on, that the Barolo offer was not exactly to his 'core' customer base, where I assume the two latter offerings were more in line.
Those who complain don't know what a deal they missed, methinks...

Although not a fan of most Australian Shiraz, I do like how WL is spreading the offers out. Two offers in the ‘mid-level’ range, one high end and one cheapy. Not everyone will love every offer, but an offer will come around soon enough that you do like if WL keeps doing it like this.

It probably meant something to Gary when they kept the Jets out of the playoffs last year.
Go Fins!
I agree with the second sentiment and I hope that paybacks are not not a bitch this coming Monday.
And Gary - Thanks for the time change on the offers. The only downside for me now is that I'll get the offers after having had a few drinks in me, which can lead to OUI (ordering under the influence).

I can't stand it. I will have to stop admitting it here when I buy.
I made it through last night and this morning without buying the Gewürz. But the darn thing didn't sell out and I read more and more of the description.
This is from the south Tyrol, a very beautiful part of Italy that I have visited. It is from the town of Traminer, does that sound familiar? It is where the grape got started, in a way. Ideal terroir. And it is a complex dry white that ought to go extremely well with Asian food, which is a current obsession of mine.
Geez. You make me think about it for this long and I am going to give in.

Gary, Please do me a favor and stop with the barolo's. I’m trying to sloooooow down on wine buying and this is really not helping.

A supertuscan
Castello Dei Rampolla Sammarco '03
Not a bad wine, not a bad price ($55.55) but I think this is something I can skip, especially in view of how much I have spent over the last week.

Yeah, I think WL can do better ;)
We offered the 1999 Sammarco, a superior wine, for $55 4 weeks ago.
That I would have went for, the 2003 was an easy pass. $55 for Sammarco is a very good price, it's just that I for one will buy no more '03 Super Tuscans without tasting first. Most that I have had are muddled with stewed fruit, not my cup of tea. Oreno and Galatrona were two exceptions, both were great, but I'd still rather buy more of different vintage first.
Oh I did avoid most Brunelli also. All I bought were Siro Pacenti and Casanova di Neri TN, and that was mostly just to keep my stupid verticles going. '02 was a complete pass, and the more '03's that I have the more I tend to feel that it should have been also.
We try not to berserk those too feeble to defend themselves mark :)

Celler Del Roure Maduresa '04, $20
A spanish wine touted by Jay Miller.
I'm sure THAT will go like hot-cakes

90 point, $20 Miller wine? that seems like 300% too expensive.
The guy gives 90 point scores to $7 wines. I would have thought a $20 wine would be 94-95 points, like Finca Sandoval last week for $19.
yeah I know but something different always is of interest. BTW, I've drunk a couple of those 07 roussillon villages I got from you recently and they were excellent but will put them away for a while-great values!

95WS v. 89AG. AG's review seems much more telling to me in terms of vintage character and certain lacking aromatics and varietal profile. No doubt WL sells out though.

Can you imagine if retailers posted all scores? Nothing would sell!
