More than a little surprised at the lack of older wines on this list since I’ve been drinking more older wines this year than I have in the past. Right now, I’m ascribing this to: (1) bad luck, (2) not decanting long enough and (3) the realization that I may have a preference for wine that’s young-ish or cellared for the medium term (under 15 years). Not sure how this is going to play out with my new burgundy habit/addiction.

I love Chandon de Briailles and drink a lot of their wines but have not had these two. Have you had other 2009s or 2010s from them? When I tasted a few 2010s from them at the Paulee Grand Tasting in NY a couple of years back they seemed incredibly closed. Were these two wines fairly open.
Hi Howard - I haven’t had any other 2009s or 2010s from Chandon de Briailles. I’ve been considering popping the 2010 Lavieres bc I’m curious and can get more of it, but I expect it to be more reticent than the Fourneaux. Both of these Fourneaux were open for business when I drank them. 2009 more so than 2010 (as would be expected), but 2010 was immensely pleasurable even though it was tightly packed and clearly holds a lot in reserve.
Here are my 2 notes:
2009 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Fourneaux- France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru (3/7/2015)
Really great. Definitely imprecise and fat - very 2009. But so friendly and delicious right now. Beautiful cherry and
Citrus. Exotic spices and smoke. Long finish. With blistered shisito peppers the wine felt spicy and explosive. A memorable food/wine combo.
2010 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Fourneaux- France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru (6/6/2015)
Need more of this! Great acidity with a ton of cherry fruit (veering toward cranberry after a few hours) and beautiful spice on the nose (again, more spice coming out with time). Fine tannins. Apart from an 09, this is the friendliest young chandon de briailles I’ve ever had. Blew away a 10 bize fourneaux drunk alongside it. Superb.
I was very surprised by the side-by-side comparison of the Bize and CdB, particularly because I find Bize’s wines (in my very limited experience) to be much more friendly early on than CdBs. But the CdB was far and away the better wine that night and not at all closed. Super precise and enjoyable. Please let me know what you think if you take the plunge.
I have a some Illes des Vergelesses from 2002, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2012 and assorted other wines (mostly Cortons and Volnays) from a few vintages. I probably will keep drinking the 2002s and 2007s for now (have not opened any 2007 Cortons yet but am anxious to do so given the low prices I paid for these) and save the 2010s. Thanks for the update.
Its in a great place Craig - not a top-line vintage of course but very open and attractive and a good early term drinker, relatively speaking.
Not sure how to correlate it to the 98 other than to say I had a 98 Haut Brion 18 months ago which, while impressive, was light years away from being ready.
Please do open those 07’ Chandon de Briailles Cortons and let us know how they are behaving as they are still available at good prices. And I am really tempt to pick up some '07 Corton Bressandes after wonderful experience recently with 2 bottles of '93 Corton Bressandes.
BTW, how are those 10’ and 12’ Illes des Vegelesses?
