What's your favorite Wine Song or Lyric?

Joni’s “Case of You” is a killer of a song - an all-time favorite - but not for its references to wine - for Joni baring her soul on vinyl

Young Bloods: Wine Song

Some folks like whiskey, whiskey’s mighty fine
Some folks like moonshine, Lord, they drink it all the time
My daddy taught me, he said, “Son, only way to keep your head in line
Drinkin’ that wine wine, wine
Keep your head stoned all the time”
(That’s what he said)

Look at them luscious little bottles, sittin’ up on the shelf
Red green and yellow, Lord, they are somethin’ else, hmmm
They mesmerize me, the way they sparkle and shine
Drinkin’ that wine wine, wine
Keep your head stoned all the time

One snort of Ruby Port really ring the bell
Then a glass of Muscatel sets my head up well
Then this sweetest bottle of cheapest sherry wine
I say goodbye to my mind

While folks around me insist on startin’ wars (baloney!)
Fightin’ and a-hollerin’, gettin’ awful sore
Politics and business, I don’t pay them no mind
Drinkin’ that wine wine, wine
Keep your, head stoned all the time
(Tell the truth)

And of course Woody Guthrie

Goin’ Down The Road Feeling Bad
(aka. Blowing Down That Old Dusty Road)
Words and Music by Woody Guthrie and Lee Hays

I’m blowin’ down this old dusty road,
I’m a-blowin’ down this old dusty road,
I’m a-blowin’ down this old dusty road, Lord, Lord,
An’ I ain’t a-gonna be treated this a-way.

I’m a-goin’ where the water taste like wine,
I’m a-goin’ where the water taste like wine,
I’m a-goin’ where the water taste like wine, Lord,
An’ I ain’t a-gonna be treated this way.

So cool! I know Al and he adores wine, and despite mentioning Rhone here, I think Bordeaux is his biggest love. We see him for a wine dinner once a year. I’ll mention to him that you like his lyrics. It’ll tickle his fancy. Thanks for sharing that!

I used this song lyric as my tag line on another board (with a picture of my deceased Siamese Le Beau yawning). It is from “All the Young Dudes” by Mott the Hoople (my first rock concert) and was written by a Mott fan named David Bowie specifically for Mott: “I’ve drunk a lot of wine and I’m feeling fine–gonna race some cat to bed. Is this concrete all around or is it in my head?”

That one is awesome.

Jeremy - remember that concert very well, think it was in '77

Phone’s off the hook
No one knows where we are
It’s a long time since I
Drank champagne.
The ocean is blue
As blue as your eyes
I’m gonna take it with me
When I go.

Take it with me - Tom Waits

I’m an old school closet Deadhead: “The other half found me stumbling 'round drunk on Burgundy wine.”

Jonathan

And of course from the same song (“Wharf Rat”) comes the name of a notable wine label:

My name is August West, and I love my Pearly Baker best
More than my wine
More than my wine
More than my maker, though he’s no friend of mine

I have to confess I have a fondness for Jimmy Gilmer’s wine song because I was exposed to it at an impressionable age:

But this Hag song is my favorite:

And FTR, the Dylan lyric is “I started out on Burgundy but soon hit the harder stuff”.

Early and rare Janis Joplin song - “Red Mountain Burgundy” - only one live (bootleg) recording that I know of, from late 1962 with Jorma Kaukonen on guitar.

Oh, Red Mountain, Red Mountain Burgundy
Lord, Red Mountain baby, Red Mountain Burgundy
Now that’s the only kind of wine baby, makes a fool out of me

We were standin’ on Grant Street, way back from the street
Lord we’s standin on Grant Street, just way back from the street
and we’re needin’ someone to go into Red Mountain Burgundy

Lord, Red Mountain, Red Mountain Burgundy
Now, Red Mountain baby, Red Mountain Burgundy
Now that’s the only kind of wine baby, makes a fool out of me

Oh, drink your manhattan, and drink your martini
Lord, drink your manhattan, and drink your martini
But if you wanna drink good booze, try Red Mountain Burgundy

Lord, Red Mountain, Red Mountain Burgundy
Aah, Red Mountain Baby, Red Mountain Burgundy
That’s the only kind of wine baby, makes a fool out of me

Take it! (guitar break)

A dollar fifty for a gallon, a quart for fifty-three
It’s a dollar fifty for a gallon, but a quart costs fifty-three
If you ain’t got much money, try Red Mountain Burgundy

Oh lord, Red Mountain, Red Mountain Burgundy
Lord, Red Mountain, Red Mountain Burgundy
Now that’s the only kind of wine baby, makes a fool out of me

It’s got a big ugly label, bottle looks like Clorox Bleach
It’s got a big ugly label, bottle looks like Clorox Bleach
But I don’t care if they packed it in card board, I’d drink Red Mountain Burgundy

Oh, Red Mountain, Red Mountain Burgundy
Aah, Red Mountain baby, Red Mountain Burgundy
Now it’s the only kind of wine baby, makes a fool out of me.

Thanks, Henry! Nothing better than Mozart, well performed. Just love it. [cheers.gif] flirtysmile

Red red wine.

The Replacements “Red Red Wine”

A bottle of Chablis, hey now, that stuff ain’t for me
Chateau Timberley, as long as I can’t see
Gallo or Muscatel, either one would be just swell
I didn’t come here to fight, hey just as long as that ain’t white

The Outlaws “Night Wines”

Last night I bedded with a bottle of Beaujolais
Trustin’ that in time my blues might drift away
Soon fallen victim
To the night wine’s sweet bouquet

Really good song, though I can’t stand the UB40 version.

“Two More Bottles Of Wine”

We came out west together with a common desire
The fever we had migtha set the west coast on fire
Two months later got trouble in mind
My baby moved out and left me behind
But it’s all right 'cause it’s midnight
And I got two more bottles of wine

The way he left sure turned my head around
Seemed like overnight she just up and put me down
Ain’t gonna let it bother me today
I been workin’ and I’m too tired anyway
But it’s all right ‘cause it’s midnight
And I got two more bottles of wine
I’m sixteen hundred miles from the people I know
Been doin’ all I can but opportunity sure come slow
Lord I’d be in the sun all day
But I’m sweepin’ out a warehouse in west L.A.
But it’s all right 'cause it’s midnight
And I got two more bottles of wine

When I’m drinking Burgundy:

I’m praying for rain in California
So the grapes can grow and they can make more wine

The Rolling Stones - “Sweet Virginia”

Thank you for your wine, California
Thank you for your sweet and bitter fruits
Yes I got the desert in my toenail
And I hid the speed inside my shoe

Wine women and whisky
Goin’ be the death of me
