My number one advice for those who travel

Ah, but then you get enough space around you so you can breathe!

Todd: We spent time last Fall in the Galapagos and then Machu Picchu as well as Lima and other towns in Peru. The people of Peru, as well as Ecuador, could not have been friendlier or more accommodating. My Spanish is “decent” at best and we had a blast with the locals. flirtysmile You must open up and give it a try! grouphug

Just be yourselves.
Some are naturally gregarious, whilst others are naturally reserved. It’s good to have a bit of flex within that, so if a reserved person feels safe/comfortable, they can come more out of their shell. Conversely if the gregarious person senses friction or discomfort, they can ease back a little.

I wonder how open to conversation the locals will be when I use my “decent, but narrowly focused” Spanish. “Does your kidney hurt?” “Do you have blood in your urine?” It’s possible these are not great conversation starters… neener

At least you don’t use “please drop your trousers and urinate into this bottle”…
