Toronto?

Any recs for Toronto restaurants? Open to anything good!

Where are you from? Toronto suburbs/neighboring cities have some of the best Chinese food in North America.

It looks like I will be there over July 4 weekend, primarily for the Chinese food (my gf is Chinese). If you’re going after my trip, I’ll be sure to give you a recap.

Corey, I’ll be there at the end of this month.

Cary, any specific recs that would be easy to get to from downtown Toronto? My wife is dongbeiren so Chinese in Toronto suburbs wasn’t quite top of mind. But still interested in anything really good or relatively unique (xibei, dai, zhejiang, Cantonese with top quality seafood would all be awesome…)!

I’ll have to ask my relatives who have more recent knowledge of restaurant names. Toronto has world class Cantonese food (lots of Hong Kong and other Guandong immigrants).

holy crap… what is ZheJiang food? i’ve never heard of it… not sure it’s known for its cuisine, or my very lack of cultural exposure…

Zhejiang is one of the 8 regional grand/traditional cuisines of China.

I am not worthy…

If you have time visit the Bata shoe museum. I took that advice from a member here and absolutely loved it. The floor of Native American foot wear will astound you as will the French fashion exhibit

Zhejiang is the province south of Shanghai. Hangzhou is the capital. A friend from Hangzhou can’t take much spice in her food and says things like “Americans like such bold flavors.” A little curious about the food she grew up on that shaped her palate, and unfortunately she can’t cook!

Cantonese usually dislike spicy foods as well because it masks the freshness and natural aromas/flavors of many dishes.

I have not been to Toronto in 4-5 years, but we went to http://rodneysoysterhouse.com/ every time we were in town. Of course you have to love oysters, but we had a blast just sitting at the bar and chatting with the guys. If you love oysters, I would encourage you to go one of the nights.

I’m a big xiaolongbao fan and the ones you can get in TO are better than anywhere else in North America I’ve been to. You’ll need a car to get to some of the better Chinese places outside of downtown. There’s a Ding Tai Fung out in Markham who do excellent xiaolongbao. I’m not 100% sure, but they’re a copy rather than a branch of the Taiwanese chain. Otherwise, Asian Legend (there are several scattered throughout the suburbs) also does admirably in that department. As for one that’s a little bit more mainland, I’d recommend Hi Shanghai.

Not sure about the byo policies, if that matters (it shouldn’t… the best pairing with Chinese food is tea anyway).

Last night we had dinner at Canoe. FYI, you may be able to get a reservation during Superlicious (restaurant week). The 3 course dinner is $48CAD or about $37USD. The restaurant overlooks the islands and water from 54 floors about the street.
