Have 1 night to spend in Lake District traveling by car into Scotland the next day in early May. Suggestions please for a nice place to stay and dine with possible walks nearby. Town not important. Returning after 40 year gap. Hotel or B+B ok. Thanks in advance.
We stayed at Storrs Hall, about 15 years ago. Out in the country a bit, but nice place.
If you can spring for it, Sharrowbay is one of the best hotels and restaurants in the UK. Stunning location too.
FWIW - we had a blast at the Honister Slate Mine (no pun intended). Took about two hours to visit, go on a jeep tour inside the mine and walk around a bit. I also bought a pretty large, engraved piece of slate.
