Nice, France.....Restaurants?

I will have a couple of days to spend in Nice and would like to know if anyone has any experience with the local restaurants.

As usual, thanks in advance.

Cheers!

La merenda was very good but it’s been years. Will you have a car to go to nearby towns?

Jim: We are actually finishing a cruise that ends in Monte Carlo but I have no desire to stay there. We won’t have a car…just plan on wandering around Nice for two days.

Cheers!

Look at their website. The chef runs the restaurant his way.

• That it has no telephone;

• So you must go there to make your reservation during opening hours;

• That credit cards are not accepted;

• That it is small and always full because the regional cuisine is so good;

• That you’ll sit on small wooden stools close enough to your neighbor to exchange your (good) reactions to the ratatouille or the daube niçoise;

• That chef Dominique Le Stanc gave up his two stars in a famous restaurant in order to concentrate on what he loves best, authentic food in the tradition his predecessors, Jean and Christiane Giusti, followed for thirty years;

• That a festival of flavors awaits you.

If you’re willing to take a short ride, Chèvre d’Or in Eze is a lovely setting and a Michelin **

Been to many of the upscale restaurants in the region on our several visits to Nice, but for my wife and me, our favorite is Le Safari in the old market. Super casual, eat outside and enjoy local dishes. For us, we start with sharing a Bagna Cauda, and then to each his own. Last summer I had the langoustines which were great. Wash it down with a nice rose. Check the website, but there are many more dishes and specials than shown on the web.

We based ourselves at Eze when we visited the French Riviera back in 2011. We drove into Nice, only 20 minutes from Eze, on a couple of day trips and lunched at:

  • One of the stalls with their own tables and chairs and a serving staff in the very lively and popular open-air market along Cours Saleya by the beach. A must visit for my wife who is in the culinary profession, or just a general ”must visit” if you want to kill a couple of hours in the city.

  • The other daytrip included a lunch at very modern restaurant that was a recommended by a local friend. Reasonable prix fixe menu that’s well executed, and really impressive, by a Japanese chef that’s based in the city. Very nice Rhone-based wine list. The restaurant is about 4 blocks from the beaches and is located in the nice commercial/shopping area of the city.

    If in case you decide to get a car,

  • A 20-minute drive up to Eze for some of their restaurants with some of the most beautiful views of the Riviera is very much worth it. Our best experience in the town was dining on the cheap, as we did dinner twice at La Vieille Maison which is right at the main cross-street of the small quaint town. Excellent family-run bistro featuring some of the most delicious home-cooked, rustic local dishes. Euro 18-25 for the 3-course meal. As for wines, not that robust.

  • You will have to reserve a table at Mirazur in the residential area of the town of Menton, which is the last French town on the border with Italy and is only a 25-minute drive from Nice. A highlight for the very professional service and food presentation, with a breath-taking panoramic view of Monaco and the rest of French of Riviera. Expensive (for us) but has the right to be and easily is worth the tariff.

Cafe de Turin for shellfish

Thank you all very much! Keep 'em coming! We are considering Eze for lunch and then grabbing another cab to get to Nice. We will then have almost two whole days to just wander. I am thinking one splurge type dinner but mainly casual. Seafood such as oysters and other shellfish would be our preference.

Cheers! :wink:

Villefranche sur mer is very close to downtown Nice and cabs or train should be available both ways. There are a few wonderful seafood restaurants by the harbor. It is a beautiful area.

Mere Germaine was very good, great oysters, and a beautiful setting.

There should also be seafood restaurants by the old market area in Nice.

Eze is crazy during the day, but calms down later in the afternoon. Have a blast

Mirazur in menton is the place to go! Fabulous views over the bay and terrific food

Barry : Thanks …but, I have never seen a restaurant with such disparate reviews on social media. Granted, I take Trip Advisor, Yelp, etc with a grain of salt, but this place was wildly all over the place. Most of the negative reviews revolve around absolutely horrendous service. Just curious…Anyone else actually been there?

Cheers!
