Updated: Large Collection of Mostly New World Wine - Best Option to Sell?

Hi All,
I have roughly 1000 bottles and want to sell about 80% of it. Do people recommend going through an intermediary or auction house or trying to sell them myself? They are all in professional storage so can be pulled very easily. I live in San Francisco, so I assume the best option would be to find a local buyer for a large quantity. Let me know if anyone can seriously help me with this endeavor or can lend some advice. Below is a list of what I have. Thanks!

Below is an updated list with approximate values based, in most cases, on the auction average and/or a 15% discount on retail average for the wines they were available for. If something looks way off it’s very possible I transposed something wrong from wine-searcher pro or a typo in my spreadsheet, or, that is just the value I put on it since I am not forced to sell anything and will just drink or gift anything that is valued below my cost.

I have also given my list to K&L wines and they are currently evaluating so I will obviously take that into account as far as what I decide to sell regarding some of the “trophy” wines that may receive a higher valuation through an auction.

I think your biggest issue is a lot of auction houses won’t want half of what you have or even if they do, they don’t value it nearly as high as you do. I think a large majority if your items are priced almost 2x more than it would actually get at auction let alone finding private buyers.

You have wines auction houses do want (schrader/saxum/maracassin/kapscandy). You can always send it off and ask for a quote, but i’m pretty sure you won’t get nearly the value you think you will based on the pricing you’ve put on there.

list wouldn’t seem so long if all bottles didn’t get their own line. Not sure where these prices came from but we’d all love that to be reality. Unless of course we were buyers

Unsure as your source of pricing or value, but the vast majority there appears to be above anything I would consider fair market.

FYI: Bottle sizes are not reflected, some are 3.0 L bottles and Magnums - prices deleted.

So… getting back to your original question. Your best bet is to send the list to one of the auction houses to get a good understanding of current market value. As has already been stated they the higher end houses will not be interested in a good bunch of it but they will be for the rest. WineBid would probably take it all. I know there are also middle men type companies that will pack it up, inventory and sell on a consignment basis. As you are probably already aware - everybody who touches it take a piece of the action - and action is rarely less than double digit percentages. Of course you also have to figure in that the auctions take a percentage off the top of your sales at around 15-20%. You start figuring all this in from the beginning (i.e. when you get that original estimate) and you get a expected value of the wine. In most cases on this board people are searching for value and opportunity - WB probably has the most educated wine buying community around so we are typically accustomed to aggressive pricing, especially when trying to move large quantities (such as you have here). Not sure this helps…

Do you only want to sell it off in bulk? It seems to be you would make more if you just listed what you want to sell individually here? There are plenty of bottles you have listed that many of us would be interested in. Of course, it’s a pain to sell and ship one by one, etc… I get that.

Yes, appreciate the helpful response. I am well aware that on this board people are primarily looking for trades or bargains (if they are going to actually cut checks), and are clearly the most educated in the industry (I too used to troll these boards for steals and trades, not retail purchases).

Wine bid, Wine commune?, ???

I’m not at all familiar with auction. I am well aware there are a lot of bottles I have that a high end auction house would not be interested in, but if I could sell $20k that is at prime drinking window without really losing any money on my initial purchase that would be all I’m trying to accomplish.

As long as I can get back a minimum of my cost, and on the collectible bottles a fair price, that is all I am going for. If I could just sell ~$20k worth in that way (I know that sounds like a lot but that wasn’t a comprehensive list, didn’t include any old world wines and wines stored out of reach). Like I said, I can easily sell through the board since my storage provider can assemble the bottles for me.

So the bottles are listed, no prices. If someone wants to make a reasonable offer for anything in this context, please PM me. For those of you focused on seeing pricing, I will just price everything out at 15-20% below searcher-pro over the weekend and update my post accordingly.

You won’t get cost back on a large majority of your wine. That’s just the nature of buying so broadly. But maybe after the profit from the blue chip wines paired up with the loss on the easy to get wines you’ll break even. I’ve done something like you did, I felt happy I broke even in total

Sean, if you’re looking to move a large chunk of that I would contact one of the local auction houses such as K&L, Bonhmas or winebid. They could get you an estimate of what your wine would likely sell for.
I know Benchmark often purchases large collections so you might want to contact them, but going that route you probably won’t get back your costs.

Send them your list and they can give you a range as well as a reserve (minimum) price.

Guys, thanks for the responses and the overwhelming PM response. I will get back to everyone over the coming days as well as post value estimates. For a lot of the wines I have the average auction, average retail, etc. all in a spreadsheet. Per the spreadsheet, if I just take the ones that have it available (47%) and use average auction there is a value of $75,026. Now, one has to assume a lot of the wines that don’t have a retail or auction price are either not popular and probably have a value less than paid, or are very low production and don’t trade, i.e. Tensley, Lillian, etc. and don’t have values so would price more off scores and knowing what people have offered for the high scoring OGT/BMT/Anniversary Series/Blue Labels, etc.

So now I do have a rough idea of value for all of those wondering.

I have obviously put more time and effort into assembling this cellar than I would want to know or care to admit (the holes in would be verticals went into my mouth or the mouths of those I was with), and would prefer to sell parcels to people who value the wines for what they are rather than people trying to (1) get a steal to flip to someone else and make a quick buck or (2) impress their tasting buddies. I appreciate the PM responses that reflect the same passion for wine I have put into assembling my collection over the last decade. Please do not PM me if you are trying to do one of the above.

I think a sort-cut/paste by bottle, not “individual bottle” would be helpful in reducing that list down to 1/10th the size…
