Atlantic City and Cape May Restaurant Recommendations

Hello All,

Heading down to the Jersey shore for a little getaway next month, wondering if anyone has recommendations for AC and Cape May. My wife and I eat just about anything and since either have been down in there in many many years, we have no idea where to go for a good meal…

Thanks in advance for your recommendations.

Peter Shields Inn in Cape May, had a nice meal and BYO.
Washington Inn, Cape May
Chef Vola in Atlantic City, if you can get in.

Chef Vola in AC is nice in a neighborhood-red-sauce-Italian-joint kind of way. It’s also BYOB.

Best tip: Don’t go to AC

There’s a place in Cape May called Panico’s (in an old church) that is BYOB which has always been a great dining experience

There are a few new restaurants in the AC area. Luke Palladino has a new one in Harrah’s and a small BYOB in Northfield (call exactly 1 month ahead to grab a ressy) Also. the White House in AC-they just opened a branch in ?caesars?? or another casino-Best Hoagies.

Steve,

Just going for an overnight to gamble a little, most of the time in Cape May… IIRC, you are into horse racing, is Monmouth close by?

Chris,

As long as it is for gambling only:) Otherwise, I would not step foot in AC. Had to go there on business about 8 months ago, and got a room at Harrahs. Took 4 room changes before we got a room without mold all over the place. Would not even have stayed in the last room we got, but had little choice at that point.

Yes, I’m in horse racing, but Harness/Trotters…not TBs. I think Monmouth would be about an hour or so away, but could be wrong. Enjoy Cape May. Cute town with nice restaurants the last time we were there, which was 6-7 rs ago.

FWIW, Monmouth is about 100 miles from Cape May. Not that close.

The White House branch is in the Taj Mahal.

If you are only going to AC for one night for some gambling, then would go to the Borgata and eat at one of the number of places there. The meal will be overpriced and just o.k. but still the best in-casino option. I have not found really good food at any of the casinos on the boardwalk or within walking distance. Also check the on-line bed bug reports for atlantic city. There has been major issues with some of the places. I have not had any room issues at the Borgata but unless you have comps built up its pricey on the weekends. Weekdays you may be able to find deals.

Well thanks for the recommendations, my wife and I really enjoyed our time in Cape May and our timing was perfect, since if we waited a week we would of been evacuated.

We ate at a couple of nice BYOB in Cape May, Tisha’s (Italian) and Geecko’s (Southwestern). Tisha’s service and food was very good to excellent which was very surprising for a resort area. Geecko’s food was very good, and service was attentive. Wish we had BYOBs in Albany area…

As for AC, we went up there for a couple of hours to gamble at the Borgata and had dinner at Bobby Flay’s Steakhouse which fit the bill for the night…

Thanks again for your help, I hadn’t been to the area in over 30 yrs and your recco definitely helped.

Bump. Anyone been to Cape May recently?

I was there two years ago and would recommend Tisha’s and The Blue Pig Tavern in Congress Hall. The mussels with red Thai curry was excellent at Tisha’s

I can’t recommend the Red Store highly enough - both for casual lunch (take-out if you desire) and fantastic BYO fine-dining dinner. http://www.capemaypointredstore.com/

Only drawback is that it’s out of town and not walk-able from town. Cash only, too.

Thanks. I think we are going to try the tasting menu dinner!

Some of Cape May is BYOB only, some is list only I believe. I think it depends on the county where the restaurant resides.

Interesting info. We will be in Ocean City N.J. for three nights in late September/early October. Any recs for dinner in the area? No problem with Cape May for one night but we don’t figure to be going north towards A.C. but any inland recs would be fine. Just want to be sure that nothing has closed for the season.

Thanks,
Curt

I generally agree with this critic’s observations:

Not sure what will be open. Note that OCNJ is dry.

Old school place in AC is the Knife and Fork, food is OK, wine list is very good. Couple years ago they had some Rivers Marie cab on the list for about $20 over release price, we finished the 2-3 bottles they had with our group.

Thanks. We have been going to OC for what seems like eons. Being “dry” is, for us, one of its attractions but eating there is something else. Cousins is not bad but I think it will be closed by the time we visit. I think many years ago (soon after they opened) they offered BYOB but the city claimed that was illegal and put a stop to it.

Cheers,
Curt
