emergency NYC chinese restaurant help

Will be there in 1 week and had reservations at the China Grill in the CBS Bld.
They called me to tell us that the has restaurant closed.
Looking for an upscale Chinese place our first night .

We like to walk but I see nothing that works on Google maps (we will be at 55th and 7th)

the two closest possibilities are Tao Uptown and Philippe. Tao looks more promising.

Since we will now have to Uber- we can travel further.

Any opinions between these two or other really upscale Chinese?

Wilfred? Bill?

not wilfred and not bill but consider hakkasan in that realm as well

la chine in the waldorf astoria

Is Mr Chow still awesome? Was the best Chinese meal I’ve ever had, but was 10-15 years ago.

57th and 2nd Ave

Do NOT go to Tao. Truly embarrassing decor, food, service and attitude. Offensive all around.

Stiff, formal, and expensive, without incrementally better food as offset.
Just go to Cafe China, on 37th between Fifth and Madison.
If not too busy, I may pop out of the kitchen to say hello.

Mr. Chow is (IMHO) a clip joint for wanna be celebrity seekers. The bill will make you choke even more than the food. Hakkasan is highly regarded. I also like Red Farm, Decoy and Mission Chinese

All of the places you mentioned are horrible and mostly scene type places. Go to Café China, authentic, corkage allowed, Michelin star, 37th street midtown.

+1 for La Chine if you’re looking for upscale and midtown/uptown.

Although downtown, and not quite “upscale”, I’d like to throw a vote for Decoy. Best Peking Duck in town.

Please see our $89pp group dining prix- fixe menu below

Decoy Chips & Homemade Pickles

Foie Gras and Strawberry Tarts
Oxtail Dumplings
Octopus Salad, Pickled Cucumber
Sweet Potato Noodle Salad

Peking Duck served with Shots, Pancakes and Sauces

Steamed Sea Bass, Black Bean Sauce
Grilled and Marinated Rib Steak
Crab & Scallop Fried Rice
Sauteed Snow Pea Leaves

Mango Pudding

op mentioned tao so i just figured scene type was the goal…

Another vote for Decoy. Best Peking Duck I’ve had outside of Hong Kong.

came here to suggest cafe china.

closest helipad is east 34th, which is also pretty close.

If helicopters will be involved, Tao is definitely the way to go.

Cafe China - Kinda upscale Szechuan food.

But if you want a much more authentic take with less fancy decor, head to Lan Sheng (36st between broadway and 7th ave) My favorite Szechuan restaurant in the city - 10 dollar corkage too.

Shun Lee West

I sat at the bar and had dinner a couple months ago - though the food was quite good, though expensive - enjoyed some of their speciality cocktails as well. I’d go back (particularly to use the drink certificates that I get when I stay at the Waldorf which was the reason that I went in the first place).

Still really good after all of the years? Back in the early 90s it was my go to restaurant whenever I had tickets to something at Lincoln Center. Probably went 4-5 times a year for a few years and never had a bad meal.

Golf clap sir.

Cafe China - Chendu Wontons, Lamb Cumin, Fragrant Fish
Lan Sheng - 166 shrimp, 139 Lamb w/jalapeño
Ny Noodle Town - China town - duck, beef w/flowering chives, duck chow fun

Both Lan Sheng and Cafe China have been Michelin 1 star

Bummer to hear, quiet and delicious when we went… no celebs in sight.
