Atlantic City

I’ll be there next weekend. Anything worth while ?

I hear the Revel is nice.

on a serious note, no trip to AC should happen w/o a stop at the White House Sub Shop for one of their famous fried subs. A great late nite treat…

Not that I have found. Food is not really the focus of AC. White House as has already been mentioned is an institution. The Irish Pub is an interesting spot for a beer and the fish and chips won’t kill you. If you want to try something better the veal chop at Bobby Flays in the Borgata is pretty good and the wine list is fair.

That town is about to hit hard times, I think. Again.

“Maybe everything that dies someday comes back” , as the poet from NJ named “Bruce” wrote, but…this time…i dunno…

Chef Vola’s, heard good things.

Knife and Fork

I forgot. Not really in AC, you’ll have to drive back towards the parkway. The Rams Head Inn. A classic. All the old dishes. Beef Wellington, table side caesar salad, baked Alaska. Decent wine list. Like going back in time…

Tough when you’re a 1 industry town and that industry meets competition from other cities as well as decreasing overall demand. A little like Detroit.
I do think AC can come back, but wow it’s going to require work and time. The ocean and boardwalk are really good assets, underutilized.
A rebranded and rebuilt AC to focus on the family aspects, amusements, golf on the water, etc. Along with say 6-8 casinos (no more, no overbuilding).
So Vegas is the ‘Dark’ gambling place and AC is the ‘Light’ gambling place.
Going to take money and time and vision.

AC has been down for 6 years now. Gambling revenue never returned to pre 2008 levels as far as I know. First the recession and then increased competition. Vegas started its tranformation decades ago when it became obvious that gabling alone would not sustain it. AC it seems has refused to accept that it needs more than a decent but not great beach and crappy casinos (except the Borgata) to survive. They did bring in some shopping but unlike Vegas, its not easily walkable from the Casinos. Spas, dining, and shows are the equivalent of AA ball when compared to the major leagues of Vegas.

The boardwalk could be a bigger asset than it is currently. It needs revamped and last time I walked it there were a lot of vacant spots and sketchy stretches that make me uncomfortable at 3:00 AM with gamblers roll. But I think the biggest issue is the amount of poverty within blocks of the beach/csinos. The whole place just has a sense of despair to me that makes it not that much of an attraction.

Gambling did not turn AC into a thriving place…beyond the casinos. “They” tried for decades, but…

A boardwalk, etc…won’t do it alone. Asbury Park, long a mini-AC in pre-casino days…and closer to NYC…has , for 40+ years now tried to “come back” via its boardwalk and beaches-- without any meaningful success. Another place of “despair”, sadly.

No panaceas for such places in the 21st century , sadly.
