Best in the West Rib Cookoff

It is time for the annual rib cookoff in Sparks, NV.

Half a million people and a quarter of a million pounds of Iowa bred St. Louis cut pork ribs.

I have a few favorite vendors and like a good foodie I bring a plastic spoon to sample BBQ sauces from the pump dispensers in search of the good stuff to buy.

My daughter lives in Reno, how do you get into this? Advance tickets, or just show up?

Just show up. It is very busy on the weekend and around dinner time.

I am going on Friday afternoon.

Thanks! Of course, she already knows about this, has been before, and is going this weekend

Moderately crowded on a Friday afternoon with a welcome cooling overcast.

I was intrigued by a new vendor this year. I used to watch BBQ Pitmasters and one of the competitors was Melissa Cookson. I tried the ribs at her Yazoo BBQ and was disappointed with the sauce and overly soft texture of the ribs.

As usual Back Forty BBQ was excellent. Good chew, flavorful meat and good sauce. I bought some of their Private Reserve sauce.
