Review of new Russ & Daughters restaurant

Kitchy review of this place to nosh.

We went for brunch last weekend.

The meaning of shissel seems to vary from what our waiter told us, vs what the article said.

I thought my egg cream could have used another shot. < Translation for non New Yorkers >>> < sarcastic comment to follow > could they spare it? [swearing.gif] < board translation - the egg cream needed more chocolate syrup.

If you go, pass on the bread basket. The $7.00 wasn’t worth it; and this, from a bread lover.

Can one buy the “schissel rye” at the store? Was that in the basket?

I’ve read a lot about that bread and its creator…and wonder if it’s worth tracking down. A little hard to do from 90 miles away, in Philadelphia, but…

The bread was good, just nothing special. Goodness knows they make a big enough deal about it. [scratch.gif] The rye (very thin sliced) tasted fine. A couple of small cut up pieces of challah (it was fine, but not what this New Yorker would have liked). Also, a couple pieces (subtle NY joke) of pumpernickel and a couple of small rolls. If you want a break basket circa 1968 Catskills, head to Juniors.

I didn’t see bread for sale. You’d have to go to the Houston Street location.
