Favorite wineries in your local state??

Other than California, Oregon, and Washington, what are your favorite US states for wines? Or are any of them worth a hoot? Also what are some of your favorite local wineries in the state in which you live?

I live in Maryland and my favorites are Black Ankle and Sugarloaf Mountain. SLM has some pretty awesome bordeaux style blends.

Ally, I live in PA, and my favorite is Chadds Ford Winery.

Ooo, that’s only a couple hours from ME. I’ll check that out.

It’s right on U.S. 1. It’s about 20 miles from my house.

I really like Herman J. Wiemer in NY, http://wiemer.com/, and Bloomer Creek http://www.bloomercreek.com/

Justin, No doubt about Wiemer! Just went there recently and loved it.

Technically I think this one is the closest to me…

Just checked out your album from your trip to the Finger Lakes, looks like a very similar trip. We were only there for a day this year, and spent the time around Seneca Lake. We visited:

The group that participated in this trip will be venturing across the border for Niagara Peninsula tastings at Ice Wine fest in late January. The more the merrier.

Justin, I would love more info about the Niagara trip if you have it. Sounds awesome. Also, thanks for the NY review. We will DEFINITELY be going back there again.

I’m looking to go across the boarder on Saturday January 28th for the event. I’ve never been to the festival, but it’s apparently a wonderful time. We would visit 6 wineries when purchasing a discovery pass, and taste icewine and icewine paired with food at each location. There’s a list of the wineries here: brochure. The only 2 we really don’t want to miss are Tawse and Pilliterri. Might have to start a thread in the gatherings if the 28th doesn’t work with the woot group, since that’s the only Saturday I’ll be able to make it.

Within my own state of CT I think Jonathan Edwards Winery … http://www.jedwardswinery.com/… is doing a really nice job with his estate grown grapes that give you a sense of the location. He also has California wines which many like but I pass on as I prefer his local estate wines(chardonnay, pinot gris, gewurztraminer, & cab franc). Nearby via ferry is the north fork of Long Island and I think there are many high quality producers but I really like the wines from Shinn Estate … http://shinnestatevineyards.com/ … and Paumanok … http://www.paumanok.com/. The 3 that I mentioned are run by terrific people that care tremendously about their viticulture and winemaking…Gary

For WA state, Quilceda Creek, Cayuse, & Abeja.

Just make me an offer Eric. [cheers.gif]

We now live in New Mexico. The only winery here that makes acceptable wine is Gruet, with their sparkling wnes.

We don’t have much to speak of in terms of wineries, but for a local, not too expensive bubbly, (I’ve never had their other stuff) this stuff really is pretty good:

http://www.westportrivers.com/index.html

Here in MA there are several that I’m excited about. I really enjoy the wines of Westport Rivers as Zach just mentioned. They make good bubbly, and their rose of pinot noir is good too. I’ve also had an Rkatsiteli from them that was really delicious (though only for lovers of high acid wines).

I also really like wine from Travessia winery in New Bedford. They source all of their fruit from local vineyards as they don’t own any. Their vidal blanc and chardonnay are quite good. They also make a very good rose.

Third, and the one I’m most excited about, is Turtle Creek Winery in Lincoln. I drive by the place on the way to work every morning. Most of their stuff is CA fruit, but they make an estate cab franc and chard that are wonderful. Super low production (less than 200 cases easily) of each make it tough to find outside the local area, but the cab franc is hands down the best domestic cab franc I’ve ever had, and the best doppelganger for a Chinon or Bourgueil I’ve found.

i live in California. Flawed Poll! [swearing.gif]

I know, I know. Just figured Cali, Oregon, and Washington are well represented in plenty of other threads.

newhere

No states in Germany, but I do live in the Bundesland of Rheinland-Pfalz (roughly equiv. to a US state.) We have the Mosel, Pfalz, Nahe, Rheinhessen, Ahr and Mittelrhein here so lots to choose from.
