Interesting story on the recreation of what may have been the first IPA in America:
Thanks for posting. My dad will enjoy this as he regularly drank Ballantine when he was young. He told me the story of his first beer and it was a Ballantine. He was working as a mover when he was in high school – would have been late 50s or early 60s. It was a really hot day and they just finished a move. The foreman threw all of the guys a cold beer. He says it was the most delicious thing he ever tasted to that point in his life.
I do remember seeing people drink Ballantine at a VFW I frequented back in the mid 90s. I also remember trying one and thought it tasted like pure bitterness. Can’t wait to try this new batch.
Pabst has SEVENTY active brands now? I thought they were just selling PBR to hipsters…
I, too, will welcome it – fond memories of monthly student/faculty get-togethers in the late 1960s at the Whaleys’ featuring Ballantine IPA and marinated flank steak.
I’ll be looking for this when I am back east.
12 Horse Ale was the bomb back in the day.
Oops that was from Genesee.
