Bibich R5 Riserva North Dalmatia (Debit/Posip/Marastina + PinotGrigio/Chard; new Am.oak for 12 mo; 13.5%;
300 cs) 2015: Med.gold color; ripe fragrant floral/pineapple/almost R-like light earthy some vanilla/buttery/oak almost muscat-like aromatic very attractive nose; bit soft rather buttery/vanilla/pencilly/Am.oak floral/pineapple/R-like/almost muscatty light earthy/herbal slight tangy flavor; very long rather buttery/vanilla/Am.oak rich/lush some floral/pineapple/R-like light earthy finish; a polished rather international style white that resembles Chard more than anything. $16.50 (BDW)

- Debit is an indigenous grape to Croatia that may have some unknown conections to Italian grapes. Prosip is a grape indigenous to the Croatian island of Korcula, but is being planted in other parts of Dalmatia coast. Marastina is a grape that is widely grown in Croatia and apparently related to Malvasia del Chianti, which accounts for the slight muscatty character. Probably indigenous to the Dalmatian coast as well, though its origins have not been identified.

The early Croatian wines I tried (Zinfandel & PlavicMali) were rather rustic in character. BlueDanube seems to be the go-to source for Croatian wines and have a very good selection.
