TN: Pleasant Surprise of the Month

1975 Heitz Martha’s Vineyard - I brought this as a back-up to a back-up to my latest Marea lunch. Truth be told, I thought it was “just” the Napa bottling. When lunch spilled over to its fifth hour I decided to open it. Served blind, it was thought to be a top Bordeaux from '82. Still densely colored with only slight bricking. Dark fruits and cedar on the nose. Great depth on the palate. Belies its age. Label stated that it wasn’t bottled until August 1979. Staggering.

Awesome surprise!

Pleasant surprise is an understatement! That’s one of Joe Heitz’s greatest hits.

one of the stunning wines that got me started on wine in the mid-80s.

Great note. I’m a huge fan of Bella Oaks as well, they really are deadringers for classic Bordeaux.

So if a '75 Heitz is a pleasant surprise, I’d love to see what qualifies as world class!
