TN: 2001 Wendouree Shiraz-Mataro

I have been digging out delicious “orphan wines.” These are the bottles that are always so hard to open, because I will likely never have one again. Last night with my folks we had the 2001 Wedouree Shiraz-Mataro and it did not disappoint. There was the telltale eucalyptus aroma, along with delicious blackberry fruit and ample structure. Still very young but very good, especially with some local beef burgers!

Thanks for the fine note on a rare gem David, and also for the sentiment of the circumstances of drinking it.

Happy Thanksgiving

A really good wine David, full of character.

This is the Wendoree I most want to try. Sigh.

Sounds delicious. I wish more OZ treasures made it up here!

I’ll just have to settle for my Massena gems…

To me the Shiraz Mataro and Shiraz malbec are value plays in Wendouree portfolio.
2001 was devilishly hot and many wines from Clare show that eucalypt character, many theorizing that the eucalypt oil volatalises and wafts on to the surface of the grapes from the gum trees in hot weather.
