When you enter a purchase into CellarTracker do you add the cost of shipping and/or tax to the per bottle price?

Always add all the related expenses that I paid to get the bottle into my cellar. That is, after all, what it actually costs.

I would say apples to apples needs all-in pricing! Shipping/no tax; shipping/tax; no shipping/tax; no shipping/no tax are all possibilities for me. Only way to compare is all in. Likewise, if I get a wine on sale, I use the sale price, even if it doesn't go on sale again.

All that said, it would be great if Eric could add an optional field for other costs (shipping/tax/buyer's premium/whatever). I suppose that wouldn't account for free shipping (which of course isn't really "free"). But it would avoid this problem.

I only enter the wine cost. If I ever want to source more I use that to compare to the retail offer. Death and taxes are a given.

Half the time I don't even enter a value. The other half I make something up to screw with the community average. ;)

Also, we cover this thread about 6 times a year. There was a similar thread about 3 weeks ago.

Only the bottle price, unless there is an extremely high cost associated, like overseas shipping, in which case I make a note. I assume I will have to get all bottles into my cellar, and shipping will always be a predictable add on almost regardless of vendor (see previous caveat). I want to be able to compare my price paid with future prices I see at auction or retail.

That said, I do include any auction house buyers premium.

All-in. If I want to source more, I use that to compare to the all-in retail offer.

If I can't put it in my hand for the listed price, that isn't the price.

This is the same issue i have with CT values. They list our combined price average but then someone buys a bottle at auction for a gavel price $20 lower and all of a sudden my CT value drops. Yet i know that there is the extra 15-25% house fee on top of the gavel price. Then sometimes tax and finally shipping. Still, CT will only show the Gavel price.

Silly.

When you guys win a bottle at auction, do you put in your final bid price or a different number?

I enter the base price in the price box then add in any shipping or tax charged in the bottle notes box below.

Bottle cost only. For Wine Bid purchases I add their markup but those are not that frequent and it is to me part of the bottle cost.

He's saying if there's a bottle that retails for $50 but costs $60 with shipping and tax, you will lose money if you sell it for $55.

I asked because I honestly thought there was an "approved" best practice but based on the replies so far it is 10 for just base cost and 11 for all in so I guess not.

I just enter the price I paid, less the cents....not tax, shipping. I will add commission to the price from auctions....and I will subtract 9% when I buy from states that don't charge tax.

I understand what he is saying. Good luck making a profit on every bottle of wine you buy at retail and then resell, tax and shipping is profit for the reseller in my mind. It just seems unrealistic to me.

I enter the price to get the wine into my cellar, every penny spent in the process to cross the cellar door. If CT had the ability, I'd give it an accretion function, force the price up by 5% or so annually to account for the cost of carry, insurance, storage costs, etc. What else could cost mean?

Those that only put the cost of the bottle in, and not all costs to get the wine in your cellar, what if you got a great deal on a bottle of wine, but that bottle was located on Mars, and it cost $1,000,000 per bottle to get it into your cellar. What would you do?? Say 2005 La Tache was $.01 per bottle on Mars, all you want. What price would go in your CT database? $.01 or $1,000,000.01?

I never put in price. Once I've purchased a wine, I no longer care about the price I paid. If I want to sell, the price I paid is irrelevant to the amount for which it can be sold.

Only the base price, no tax, no shipping. This way I can compare regardless of the source. Sometime there is tax (in state), sometimes not (out of state). Sometimes there is freight (out of state), sometimes not (local). And sometimes I get the best of both with an out of state, no tax, free freight deal. I factor all of this into my head when making the purchase, but only the base price is entered into CT.

For those of you whole enter the price with shipping, what if you are ordering from a store a few at a time but will wait until it ships to pay the shipping cost? Do you wait until the wine ships to enter it? If you entered when you paid for it do you go back and edit the price once you learn the actual shipping cost?

I enter the price of the bottle. No tax and no shipping.

I add tax but not shipping since I pick up from Winebid warehouse in Chicago.

I enter the cost of the bottle plus tax but don't include shipping. You could automatically add $3 per bottle on a case if you wanted but I'm not worried about that level of detail.

Base only. If I ever need total cost then I will add sales tax and estimate shipping. Otherwise I want to know its value for replacement cost or compare for a reload.

I round up to the nearest thousand. Makes my cellar look more valuable.
