Wine Movie Recommendation?

I’ve recently seen Red Obsession, Somm & A Year In Burgundy, but wondering if there are any other solid documentaries the board can recommend?

A Year in Champagne and the one about Maynard starting his label. I haven’t seen either, but I’ve heard good things about both.

Mondovino

This is a tough Genre.

A couple that have not been mentioned:

Terry Thiese Leading between the Lines - http://www.terrytheisemovie.com

Oregon Wine Grapes of Place - http://watch.opb.org/video/2232302077/

Big plus 1!

I really disliked the Maynard doc (Blood into Wine - available by DVD from netflix but not streaming.) He is not a personality and the story was hard to follow, with some structural storytelling problems, and there was no payoff if you sat through the boredom. Even though I love his bands, wine and new wine areas, I would not recommend, especially compared to the other docs mentioned in this thread.

There’s a romantic comedy with Meg Ryan that is pretty winecentric:

Somm, was a let down. Passionless memorization in search of a title and well paying career.

Old news but I enjoyed Sideways.

Not a documentary, but try Tu Sera Mon Fils (You Will Be My Son). A dark fictional character study of a St Emilion chateaux owner, French with English subtitles, beautifully shot at Clos Fourtet. Available on Netflix.

Hollywood but bottle shock is fun

I just watched this last night because of this post. Thank you. Along with Eric Rohmer’s and Autumn’s Tale, it is one of the best movies with winemaking as a significant element in the plot that I have seen.

Just ordered a new doc called Barolo Boys. Haven’t seen it yet though.

+2 Very interesting movie.

Just watched the documentary Harvest last week. It was interesting to me, since I have met some of the people that were in the documentary. 2011 Sonoma harvest was tough.

Mondovino, certainly, but watch the 10 episode TV version rather than the mercilessly edited down movie version. Otherwise you lose about 8 hrs of content!

What did you think of these three?

I thought I was the only one that didn’t like Somm -

You Will Be My Son was good.

+1
saw it on a plane back from burgundy
pretty good imo

Somm was ok. Can’t possibly imagine at my age knowing that much about wine C+ / B-

Red Obsession was better. I feel like I knew the majority of the content so it didn’t captivate me, but interesting to see the impact that the Asian market did on Bordeaux (Although my wallet isn’t happy). Most importantly, my wife really enjoyed it. B- / B

A Year In Burgundy was my favorite of the 3. It was pretty cool seeing the process and seeing the passion, dedication and respect that these people have for their vineyards. B+
