A big Sunday night

My great mate Joe Holyman was over from Tassie so we got a couple of friends together to give the liver a workout last night.

  • 1940 Château Rieussec - France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes (8/31/2014)
A little bit wooly on the nose but has some dried fruit and honey smells as well. There’s is the faintest suggestion of sweetness in the mouth and flavours are quite savoury, tasting of teak, earth and mushroom. The finish is somewhat akin to marmalade without any sweetness. It is perhaps just one level up from a curio and certainly not a delicious drink but fun to try none the less.
  • 1984 Gaston Lacelle Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru (8/31/2014)
Colour was good and the wine was quite cheesy and lactic to begin with. It breathed up really well and had layers of creamy orchard fruits coupled with some custard apple and plenty of smoke. It finished with some fruit rind bitterness and had good underlying minerality.
  • 1998 Domaine Dujac Clos de la Roche - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru (8/31/2014)
This was a beautiful bottle. On the nose the cherry fruit is so clean and bright and is joined by the heady scent of fresh rose petals. In the mouth it is lacy, full and sweet yet incredibly detailed. It has the perfect balance of sweet fruit and savoury earthy traits, is perfectly proportioned and finishes with excellent cut. It still feels quite primary but is absolutely delicious right now.
  • 2012 Domaine Jacques Carillon Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru (8/31/2014)
Almost looked a little fruity and forward at first but we poured it into large bowled glasses and watched it become more nuanced as it took on air and came up closer to room temperature. There are pristine white peach notes along with some honeysuckle and Arum lilies. It has plenty of minerality just below the flesh and is cool and rocky at its heart. It is mouthfilling and viscous and loaded with latent power but has a delightful airiness about it. Balance is exquisite and length of flavour terrific. Thoroughly enjoyable now but should be special in a decade.
  • 2012 Stoney Rise Pinot Noir Holyman Project X - Australia, Tasmania, Tamar Valley (8/31/2014)
Expressive, sweet cherry fruit on the nose and palate right from the get go. This has some floral spice from 100% stem inclusion and the oak is well judged and supportive. It has great volume and excellent detail and length of flavour is superb. An outstanding Aussie Pinot that is built for the cellar.
  • NV Equipo Navazos Jerez-Xérès-Sherry La Bota de Palo Cortado “Bota NO” Nº 47 - Spain, Andalucía, Jerez-Xérès-Sherry (8/31/2014)
Super complex aromas of dried fruits, salt, antique furniture and freshly shucked oysters. Dry and salty in the mouth with faint suggestions of fruit tempered by dry savoury elements. Length of flavour is incredible.

Pretty f’ing awesome. I had Citrus Ninja Exchange, '91 Monte Bello, Graham’s
Six Grapes. I am envious of that '40 Rieussec.

I’m envious of the ‘Citrus Ninja Exchange’ Jason. What the f*ck is it?

Great set of wines. Note on the dryness of the 1940 Rieussec interesting - is this typical of old Sauterne?

They do tend to dry out over time Mike, especially the low or no botrytis years.

Forgot to add a note on another bottle we opened quite late at night.

2012 Faiveley Latricieres-Chambertin: There’s a party of red and black fruits up front and a well of geological matter down back. It tightens considerably and quickly in the glass and the wine’s structural elements take hold. It finishes very savoury with chewy tannins.

A great double IPA from Westbrook Brewing out of SC.
Great set of wines, Jeremy.
Sounds like a nice Sun night.
Cheers.

Thanks Dennis. You guys have so many different craft beers over there it is hard to keep up with all of the names.
