TN: 2012 Alfred Merkelbach Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Spätlese

  • 2012 Alfred Merkelbach Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Spätlese - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (7/23/2014)
#12-13, 9% abv. Very pale colour. Slightly spicy nose, with some green apple aromas as well and if you try very hard, a bit of a herbaceous note. The palate is very restrained, and this is one of the most restrained '12s I’ve tasted so far. Not to worry – this is still loaded with fruit and acid. I think it’s the intense minerality that tames the beast. Strangely enough there’s a bit of a chalky texture to this wine. A light hand was used to make this wine; it’s clear as crystal (pun intended). Lovely. (90 pts.)

Merkelbach’s 2012s are flat out awesome. Hunt down the Urgluck Spatlese.

They’re so hard to find… I’ve only ever seen that wine at Acker.
